When I'm 17

Here in the UK, bike laws state that when your 17 you can ride a 125cc or any machine limited to 33bhp.

I had originally thought of gettin a cbr125, but having spoke to other members I'd been advised to go for the vfr400 instead and then just stick a limiter in.

Anyone got an opinion?

Thanks, Phil

I know we already talked about it, but CBR 125's really are awful! Don't be fooled by anyone trying to pass them as even a remotely sporty bike.

Split here.

VFR is a tubby old ....., but quite fast.

CBR125 is LOTS of fun as you're trying to keep the momentum due to the .... engines they have, trust me, I've ridden one on a trackday and they're gutless.

If its corner speed and momentum you are after then NSR 125 is clearly the way to go as it actually has some sports related parts on it.

Get a bloody trike!!You will not believe the experience they can give, especially drifting on wet roads.

I had a GSXR400 import.................... for parts, but lots n lots of fun!

Is the VFR an import?

If you do get a 400 - I can really recommend this forum:

Used to post there loads when I had mine - had some good rideouts

This is what happens when you get branded by one bike company. You loose your soul and your eyes turn to ....!!!! JJK

I learned a lesson the other day, and now I don't rag any bike! You never know what someone owns when you go making statements that regard something that, and you might miss the opportunity of meeting some great people.

Because you don't like a bike you may not meet great people? Don't think I quite understand you there.

I don't really know what you're talking about, i just don't rate Ducatis. The old ones look good but the Jap bikes will perform better, cost you less and wont let you down as much.

Buying a Jap bikes are a dime a dozen and have no character...and frankly boring....Be ever so slightly different and get a Ducati Monster and learn the joy of a twin.

My Dad has a 96 m900 (this was before Ducati labled them monster) with 70,000+ miles and has never let him down. It did cost more than most standards bikes, so I'll give you that. As for performance, clearly you either have never ridden one, or have been smoked by many!

I think you'll find a 600cc Ducati twin wont be as fast as the equivalent capacity (or equivalent price) jap bike. I wouldn't be willing to compromise the performance of my bike for the sake of "character" and i wouldn't spend the extra money needed to keep up with cheaper alternatives. Additionaly i don't actually like Ducatis much.

Considering he will have it have to have the bike restricted to 33bhp then it make little difference on power...
A Monster or an SS 600 or even a 750 (not to mention a 900s) being riden by the right rider can give any riced up japanese garbage wallowing in its dust...
Besides the engine braking allows you to run more deeply into a corner and with greater speed...and riding bikes ain't about going fast in a straight line (that easy) its about being fast on the bendy bits!

Phildean, don't listen to any of us....Buy yourself the bike you are most comfortable and happy with...it will be yours, best of luck and enjoy...see you on the road mate and be safe!

1. That can be said of any bikes, the rider is the important factor.

2. Engine braking is a prefference, some people like it some people don't.

3. That being considered a lighter bike is ideal, and those big V-twin Ducatis are heavy.

Here in the states, most small bikes are 600cc. So I'm not to sure what the bikes are that he is interested in.

So, if talking about lightness, how about a thumper? You get the needed torque in small cc's? XR CRF, DR KDX, XT or some sort of dirt bike and even mod it into a supermotard. Besides, IMO they look better than sport bikes

, cheap, and rarely dose anything brake if you drop it.
