Valentino's tyres

I was watching free Friday practice on Eurosport this morning, and the guys' commentating were discussing Valentino's tyre situation. They too were saying it is a little sad that Valentino is making an issue out of the tyre problems.
They then went on to talk about the last couple of seasons, where before new tyre regs were introduced, Michelin were putting such an effort into racing that during the European rounds there would be a van leaving the factory every 6 hours with tyres bespoke made in accordance with on track data. They were saying that on Friday in Europe, in many cases Valentino was not the fastest. Come Saturday morning, they would have new purpose made tyres available, and Valentino would be quicker. The same would be true for Saturday night, Sunday morning.

They also discussed how this meant Valentino was dominant in European rounds, but not so dominant in the flyaway GPs.

I didn't know about this. Did anyone else? I thought it was an incredible piece of information.

Tis true they would just fly in a new tyre for him + pick it up from the airport .

Yeah I heard about this last year, I think they did it in F1 as well. I don't believe it took so long to do something about it. Was it just Valentino or all Michelin-shod riders?

i heard them talking about that last year and i think it was almost all the michelin riders, definitely the (repsols, gresinis and yamahas anyway) had that option available to them and i expect bridgestone did the same thing for the far east races at Japan and Malaysia for example and that is why ducati and Capirossi were good there.

michilin alway had the advantage of being able to get tyres to the eropean races in a jiffy, but thats no longer the case, good thing imo ,makes for a more even playing field.

They were talking about it as if it were only Valentino, but I find that hard to believe. In fact, I found the whole thing hard to believe, but I guess Randy Mamola and co should know.

Article about Rossi on new tyre rule and michelin bringing overnight tyres last year.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE <div class='quotemain'>Michelin sources have confirmed that races were rarely won using 'overnight' tyres under the old rules.

Although it is only Valentino saying it in this article i read another article by Suzy Perry elsewhere and she seemed to suggest it was all michelin riders benefiting from michelin being able to bring tyres overnight.

I'll grant Dunlop that little advantage.... especially as it doesn't seem to be helping them much anyway
<
Where are Dunlop based anyway?
