As most of you are probably aware, Sykes did the double at the Brands GP triple header by taking both dry wins on Saturday and Sunday.

I've never been a big fan of Sykes, but I'm happy to say that the guy has earned my respect, but not for the reason you might think.

To be honest, the cheerleading of Tom Sykes in 2009 by the British press was kind of annoying b/c Ben Spies was really the only reason to talk about Sterilgarda Yamaha, and at the time, Tom was probably the weakest of the BSB riders to move into WSBK competition. His two wins at Brands have changed all of that not b/c he demonstrated that he can ride at Brands Hatch, but b/c his wins afforded him a privilege he's not had for quite some time--a microphone and the opportunity to speak for himself rather than respond to a lead-in question from a journalist.

His two post race interviews made it clear to me that Tom is a grinder with a Nicky Hayden style work ethic. It makes sense that he would have failed to impress at Yamaha Italia since the team is well sorted, well-funded, and has generally employed at least 1 prodigiously-talented SBK star. It also makes sense then that he is probably the only man for the job at Paul Bird Kawasaki alongside Vermeulen, the same way that Hayden was the only person who was going to get the RC212V pneumatic engine developed.

If Sykes doesn't have a job at Paul Bird Kawasaki next year, it will be a travesty. Kawasaki cannot afford to let a rider of his talent and work ethic walk away b/c every yard Kawasaki earn is hard yard. If Kawasaki are honest with themselves, they need someone like Sykes.

seen on twitter i think the nxt test for kwak sykes is being replaced by lascorz just for the test

Tom is very very brave. There was a moment in race one when he passed Kiyo on the Brabham straight, and the bike started weaving getting totally out of shape beneath him whereupon he just kept the throttle pinned to make the pass - that's why Birdy loves him.

To be fair in the preceding year to his Yamaha Italia seat in WSBk, he put in some stunning rides for Crescent Suzuki in BSB. He also aired his talent and showed serious potential the year before on the Stobart Honda. He's always been well liked and well respected over here by pundits, the press, riders and fans alike.

I got to see Tom Sykes at a Mallory practise day. He`d just left the Stobart team and Ithink it was his first test on the Rizla Suzuki, anyhow his speed into Gerrards was unbeleivible....I didn`t think anyone could go that fast around that particular corner.

As a Kawasaki-guy, I'd like his staying at PBM for next year. He's doing a much better job than I expected and much better than one of my fav: Vermeulen. I know Chris was ....... unlucky this year, but the results speaks for themselves. On the other hand for me it seems Lascorz is also a very fast, talented rider and Kawasaki would make a mistake with letting him go to another manufacturer. Without him the ZX-6R would not be a championship contender and he was pretty fast on the 10R once during a test.

I bet Kawasaki are testing both guys right now with the new bike then they will decide. Either way I will be sad a bit.

Sorry to ruin it, I should have been thinking about spoilers. Friday's race is still unspoiled.

No worries Lex, I typically download the BSB races and get around to watching them during the week when I can.

I saw race 1 & 2, good stuff. I'm curious to see if Sykes will turn this positive weekend back home into an improved weekend at the next WSBK race.

I read recently that Kawasaki might shaft Tom Sykes next year despite the fact he's developing the new bike and is easily their best rider for ages. Apparetly CV and Lascorz are both contracted for next year so there might not be any more space. I will be pretty disappointed if thats the case

Tom Sykes finished 9th on a championship winning bike in 2009. Ben Spies argueably rode the wheels off that bike that may not have been the best bike on the grid. Looking at the standings this year (noted that its not the same bike) the Yamahas are 5th and 7th. If Tom was still on that Yamaha I think he would be around the same as the current riders, maybe even better. He is a victum of bad luck and circumstance. I feel bad for the dude. I think he could be top 5 material in WSBK given equipment and time.

Tom Sykes will be on a 3rd factory Kawasaki in the PBM team, according to MCN the papers are signed. Cool!

He earned it big time, I only hope that the new 10R will be as good as we hope. We shall see in the next days.
