Tech 3 boss Herve Poncharal has reassured Ben Spies fans that the American will get strong support from Yamaha in MotoGP next season - but is unable to confirm how similar the World Superbike star's YZR-M1 will be to the machines of factory team riders Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo.

Spies, fighting to win Yamaha's first ever WSBK title at his very first attempt, has signed to ride alongside fellow Texan Colin Edwards at Yamaha's satellite MotoGP team next season - in place of James Toseland.

“You know I have always been very proud because two years ago we were with Masao Furusawa [Yamaha racing boss] and he was asked by some journalists 'you have two good teams this year; a good factory team and a good satellite team' and he said 'no, we have four factory riders and four factory bikes'. I was proud of that,” replied Poncharal, when asked about the level of factory support for Spies.

“The last few seasons we have been quite regularly close to the front and, at the end of the day, the engines are sealed - with the new rules - so I have not had the chance to check Valentino's engine, Jorge's engine and my engines. Also, Ben has a [two-year] contract with Yamaha Japan directly and not with Tech 3.

“I think Yamaha will give us really good support, but in details I can't answer you more than that. I am sure Ben will have really good support, the same as Colin and the same as James this year,” concluded Poncharal.

Spies, a triple AMA Superbike champion, will start the Portimao WSBK season finale 10 points behind Ducati's Noriyuki Haga.

The 25-year-old - who rode in three grands prix for Rizla Suzuki last season, claiming a best finish of sixth - will then make his Yamaha MotoGP debut as a wild-card at the Valencia season finale.

Spies will take his crew chief Tom Houseworth and mechanic Gregory Wood, who have both been with him since his AMA days, to Tech 3 next season.

I don't believe that Toseland wasn't getting fair treatment at Tech3. If that was the case JT wouldn't have been able to switch over the crew chiefs. All this blah blah blah is just a selling point so that Spies would switch over to MotoGP. Tech3 is looking for the next super star rider, their hopes WERE on Toseland, but unfortunately he was unable to deliver. Spies is very concern on how much support Yamaha is actually giving Tech3, thus the need to reveal to the press what and how much support they are actually getting. Yamaha would be foolish to not give everything at their disposal to Tech3 because I think Spies is a promising racer. But of course everything has to get an OK from Whining' Rossi first before Yamaha can go through with it. Can you imagine Spies getting the best of Rossi??

According to the Yamaha boss they were all getting good bikes. Kind of hard to believe

This article doesn't really say alot, if you look at the above, all Herve is saying is that Spies will have similar support to what Tech3 have this year. Nowhere does it say about Spies getting a far superior machine to Colin. Not even Herve knows exactly what support they are getting.

fook did JT even get the same gear as Colin.!!.You're rewriting history here. Toseland went to Tech3 because Yamaha massively increased its investment in the team. They went from being the least competitive bikes on the grid to being the best non-factory bikes. They had both riders on very good spec machines - slightly behind factory spec. How often do sat teams get a completely new engine in the middle of the season?

Heck, JT even got his choice of crew chiefs! He got everything he asked for and didn't produce enough to hold onto his seat.

Concessions were made for Toseland, like the crew chief swap, but I'd be surprised if his bike has the same bits as Edwards. It's not favoritism, it's not unfair, it's a contractual agreement between Edwards and Yamaha. And for next season it will be the same situation except that Spies is the one signed to Yamaha. They won't neglect Edwards, nor have they neglected Toseland, he will just be further down the order. Not much in this article, really.

In reply to the original post I think the bigger difference is that (from memory) Toseland was a Poncharal rider, whereas Spies is a Yamaha rider.

JT did get concessions but CEii has been the Yamaha rider in that team and thus likely to have been receiving a level of support not available to or well before JT (that is an assumption on my behalf) given this contractual arrangement.

If reports are correct for 2010 CEii is now the Poncharal rider whereas Spies is the Yamaha contracted which will likely mean a reversal of fortunes for CEii in the 'pecking order' department.

Do I blame Yamaha in this case?

Not at all as for mine (and as has been mentioned in other threads) Spies has the major X-Factor that I do not feel has been there with Toseland (nor CV) and it is this that I feel makes the guy a very likely success in the big game

JT knew where he stood and toed the line. He may have been Yamaha's PR guy and got the support and concessions from Tech 3 especially in regard the Crew Chief swap, but the bottom line is that he was still behind Colin in terms of Yamaha priority.

There will be no way for any of us to know for certain whether Ben
receives superior (or even comparable to Rossi and J-Lo) engine and
support as a direct employee of Yamaha - but it would surely make
sense from Yamaha's point of view, if they also rate his prowess as
as a rider as highly as many others do. Now's the time for them to
put their money where they're mouths are, what with Rossi's
next contract talks on the not-so-distant horizon. If Ben even comes
close to realizing his potential - it will definitely be a factor at Rossi's
next round of negotiating. Yamaha knows that Rossi is both aging,
and restless - and would do well to show foresight by investing more in Spies'
future, which can theirs as well. If and when Rossi departs Yamaha,
Lorenzo with his raging ego is going to be a handful. Yamaha would
smart to cement a strong relationship with the more level-headed
Mr. Spies. I'm not saying Spies will be de-throning Lorenzo anytime
soon, but his potential is far and away more that that of Collins
especially in terms of Yamaha sales in the USA. If they come out
with a Spies replica, I'd take that as a sign from above that it's
time to trade in my trusty R6.

I'm pretty sure Herve knows what support his team got this year (read the quote) and he knows what level of support to expect next year... its just you (and me) that don't...

Re reading it, you're right mick, my bad!

He can't answer any further, because i don't think he's allowed to, not because he doesn't know.
