At least he will get that off of his mind, and consequently be able to focus on winning the championship this season.

Rossi to pay €35 million to settle tax evasion dispute, Gazzetta reports
The Associated Press
Published: February 8, 2008
PESARO, Italy: Valentino Rossi will reportedly pay about €35 million (US$50.8 million) to settle a dispute with Italian tax authorities.

The Gazzetta dello Sport reported Friday that authorities had been investigating the seven-time motorcycling world champion and wanted €112 million (US$162.5 million) in unpaid taxes, fines and interest.

Rossi will hold a news conference Tuesday after meeting the tax authorities to settle the dispute, the newspaper said.

Rossi, who had said he would pay if found to have avoided taxes, couldn't be reached to comment. Yamaha team manager Davide Brivio declined to comment, saying it was a personal matter for Rossi.

Rossi, Italy's highest paid athlete, is alleged to have failed to declare €60 million (US$87 million) from 2000-04.

Both crash.net & autosport report it as 20 million euros. Sounds like the media are hyping it up again.

Hate facts like what?
- That stoner DO use a lot of traction control?
- That motoGP DID get it all wrong when they said DP got the #2 plate this year as a reflection of the number of victories?
The list go on and on but the main fact and the one I do hate is:

- That you ARE doing little else but trolling on the forum.

Valentino Rossi has reached a settlement with the Italian tax authorities that will also see the #46 'officially' return to live in Italy.

Rossi has listed London as the location of his official residence since 2000, but this was disputed by the Italian tax authorities and lead to an investigation, which began last August.

The final deal reached will see Rossi pay 19 million euros in back taxes for 2001-2004, plus a further still-to-be-defined amount - as much as 16 million euros - for 2005 and 2006, meaning the Yamaha rider's potential payout could reach 35 million euros.

"I'm very happy with the way this difficult affair has turned out. I will be calmer now and that will help me to concentrate on my work," said a statement from the seven-times world champion.

"For several reasons I have already decided to return to live in Italy. London is a great city but spending more time with my family and friends has become increasingly important for me given that my
MotoGP
commitments mean that I spend more than half the year away from home.

"I could not return if I had problems with the Italian tax authorities and I could not allow this to drag on either. This agreement will allow me to relax and prepare for the new racing season."

The Italian tax authorities had originally claimed that Rossi could face a bill of 112 million euros.

Not really... He did not do anything different from what Biaggi or Capirossi, or even Locatelli, have done: put his residence in another country where there are less taxes for high incomes like his.

The Italian taxmen have been so much after him simply because he is very famous. They do not even have a particularly strong case against him, they were just trying to make big news. In Italy even law enforcers like to make the headlines...

Rossi's lawyer hired to advise him in this case (Italy's prominent expert in tax matters) had actually advised him to refuse to pay and rather go all the way (the case would take years to arrive at a verdict and probably at the end he would have been cleared of charges). This was on record in the Italian press.

But Rossi has chosen to negotiate and 'buy' a settlement in order to close this chapter and have peace of mind now, before the season begins. It is a price he was not obliged to pay. This shows he is now determined to concentrate on racing only, and also tells us how much stress he felt last year because of all this.
