Valentino Rossi’s flirting with four-wheel racing continued this week, when the four-time MotoGP champion - who’s en route to a fifth crown, having won eight of this year’s 10 races - completed a two-day test session with Ferrari.

Aboard last year’s F2004, Rossi shared the Fiorano circuit in Italy with one of the Scuderia’s regular testers, Marc Gene. Although official laptimes were not disclosed, Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Rossi’s best laps fell some three seconds short of Michael Schumacher’s F2004 record at the circuit.

"I wanted to get a better understanding of a Formula 1 car and I would like to thank Ferrari for giving me the opportunity to do so," said Rossi. "The two days were intensive and interesting. I completed a lot of mileage and I began to understand the handling of the car, working with the engineers and Marc Gene.

“[Now] I’ll go back to the two wheels where there is still a long way to go to the end of the season."

For those who do not believe in mere coincidences, however, Rossi’s “interesting days - observed from up close by Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo and team boss Jean Todt - could be the first indication of who's the Scuderia’s favorite man to replace Michael Schumacher from 2007 onwards.

Rossi announced this week that he’s renewed his MotoGP contract with Yamaha through the end of the ‘06 season - the same timeframe of Schuey’s current Ferrari deal.

Meanwhile at Monza, Luca Badoer continued development work on the F2005, completing 86 laps with a best time of 1:23.328. The scarlet team will carry on working tomorrow again with Badoer behind the wheel.

Hope Vale don`t go for a few more years,I personally want to see at least 2 seasons with him on 800cc just for the sheer entertainment!

I won't be surprised if Rossi leaves for F1 in 2007. Brivio announced in public that Rossi would go to F1 in 2007 and that was the reason for his single year contract for 2006, then the Rossi camp was quick to deny it. Ferrari then part ways with the long time no. 2 driver Barichello and sign Italian Felipe Massa the day after Rossi announces his stay in MotoGP for 2006. The day that Ferrari announce the release of Barichello and addition of Massa, Rossi completes a test at their test track in front of Ferrari's president and team boss aboard the F2004 alongside Ferrari's regular tester. It all makes perfect sense in my mind. An all Italian team in 2007.

Its a difficult one isnt it. I think if he stays with motogp for the 800cc's then he wont just stay for one year. If he's guna leave bikes soon then i think he'l leave when the 990cc bikes are knocked off the top perch and remain the overall best ever 990cc rider.

Im still unsure tho, as to what would be more exciting to watch, Rossi in F1 or Rallying. For sure F1 would get more TV coverage so it would be easier to see him and boy would it make even more popular, the Italian Rossi going to the Ferrari F1 team, they'd win just on passion.

I really hope he dosn't go to F1. F1 has major problems at the moment and they are not going to be fixed soon or perhaps never. but this is a subject for another day.

F1 is all about Tech far less on driver ability unless Rossi got the right drive he will not feature. Ferrari are on the decline there is no free ticket back. It would be just a pure waste for him to go there.

Maybe he'll leave for F1 and win that for a few years and be bored and return to bikes and win more GP championships, then off to WRC for rally championships, then join a bowling league and win the world bowling championships, then off to....

It wouldnt surprise me!

As a kind of ambassador figure for motogp i think hes always guna be around.

I can see him going grey, owning his own team...

Rossi's time was only 3 seconds off Michaels best time too. That really impresses me. Not many of the motogp guys could do that if any. In fact, does Rossi ever drive a car? I doubt he drives in London.

My thought is that Rossi could definately be competitive in F1, definatley.

I agree that Rossi could be competative in F1.

I think Rossi will want to win a championship under the new 800cc bikes to say he has won on everything. As I have stated before I think he will stay on bikes for a few more seasons.

I don't think he'll ever own a team, it seems to me that he is in the sport because he loves to race. not because he loves the politics of it or because he likes to scurry about and please sponsors. Once he retires I think he'll be a consultant to a team like Doohan was for Repsol Honda.

This article was from earlier this year, and since rossi quashed any moves to F1,and we must remember 3 second's in F1 is life time, respectable for a novice,Rossi did a bit as a boy in cart's, but his father found the sport to expensive, and give rossi the chance like himself then to race bikes, which he took to like petrol to a match, and at this stage in rossi's life to go to F1 and be competitive would be a motorsport miracle,if he did go there and pull it off good luck to him, but i have also follwed other motorsports WRC and was marshalling the stage for the Wales Rally GB,where on Day 1

check the links and judge for yourself, he is very speicial on a bike, but to go to cars and do the same, will take some kind of magic, but other than John Surtees no one has gone to be world champion in both car's and bike's,but if there is a record to be broken, i know of no other racer 4 or 2 wheels today, who would be capable, other than Vale !God i must take a lie down now after this !

2002 WRC NEWS !
Result's day one SS2[speicial stage2]

I personally think he will be in bikes for a while I think he wants to be the best ever on bikes, I kinda think he's got that personality to think like that. So he has to spend more time in bikes if he wants to do that IMHO. F1 sucks anyway only overtaking they do is in the pits farkin boring

eheheh loved this bit

"If he wants to grope himself through his leathers on the warm-up lap, pierce his ears or drive the Ferarri F1 car, he's damn well going to do it, mister."

Check this to

"there's got to be something super-appealing to American men about riding a bike powered by its own atom-splitter."
