Rossi to face Colin McRae in Monza Rally
News, 15/11/05

Valentino Rossi will enjoy some four-wheel fun in next weekend's Monza Rally, driving a WRC-spec rally car in the event held at the famous Italian circuit.

The Yamaha rider had a shakedown in last weekend's Moto & Miti Championshow in Pesaro, where he took part in rally and karting events alongside several MotoGP stars. Rossi has had several rally outings in the past, and even took part in the British RAC Rally three years ago.

Rossi will team-up with an experienced co-driver, Carlo Cassina, a former World Champion alongside Mike Biasion. Driving a Subaru Impreza WRC, Rossi will be one of the main stars of the event along with WRC Legend Colin McRae who will be driving a Skoda Fabia.

Rossi and McRae will also face the best Italian drivers in the event finale, the Master Show, a competition held on a 1.5 km course set on the main straight of the Monza circuit.

Several well-known figures from the MotoGP paddock will also take part in the Master Show including Yamaha Factory team manager Davide Brivio, who will be joined by Graziano Rossi in another Subaru Impreza. Brivio's brother Roberto, who also works in the Yamaha garage as Colin Edwards's mechanic, will enter the event in a Fiat Punto alongside Alessio Salucci - better known as Uccio, Valentino Rossi's close friend and ‘right-hand man’.

Rossi beats McRae at Monza Rally
November 21st, 2005
MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi finished his first competitive outing in a Subaru WRC car with an impressive second overall - ahead of former World Rally Champion Colin McRae - at this weekend’s Monza Rally Show.

Although far from a ‘full’ rally - the event uses parts of the famous Italian racetrack and its access roads to create asphalt stages - the event attracted top drivers and machines, with Rossi and his Subaru facing a two-pronged attack from the Skoda WRC entry of McRae and former Le Mans winner Rinaldo Capello.

Rossi would finish 5.6secs down on overall winner Capello by the end of the event, with McRae a further 43secs back. The rally consisted of a 13.75km ‘junior’ stage and a 26.75km ‘grand prix’ stage, both of which were used repeatedly to give a total of seven stages. Of those, Rossi would win four and Capello three.

However, Rossi would go on to beat current DTM driver Capello in Sunday’s ‘Master’s Show’ semi final - a form of knockout superspecial competition that ends the rally - putting him in a straight head-to-head battle with McRae in the final. The Factory Yamaha rider would then win the ‘Master’s Show’ final by 1.4secs over the Scotsman.

Rossi plans to make further outings in the Subaru, which are expected to include a further ‘exhibition’ event at the Bologna Motorshow and then perhaps a snow or gravel rally in between his MotoGP pre-season testing commitments.

Monza Rally Show – overall standings:

1. Rinaldo Capello/Luigi Pirollo Skoda Fabia WRC 1h 21m 53.1s
2. Valentino Rossi/Carlo Cassina Subaru Impreza WRC 1h 21m 58.7s
3. Colin McRae/Glen Patterson Skoda Fabia WRC 1h 22m 41.9s
4. Andrea Dallavilla/Daniele Vernuccio I Peugeot 206 WRC 1h 23m 46.3s
5. Pierfranco Uzzeni/Danilo Fappani Subaru Impreza WRC 1h 24m 55.7s

I think your right there bud!

I think if he does leave gp's, it wont be too F1 coz thats just too boring for him, they need to sort the overtaking issues.

Nice drive from him though!

yes my own opinion would be WRC,but even there he would really have to be good,to cut it with these guy's,but i think it will be here,if anywhere, where Rossi will get this grale of two different world motorsport titles !

You guy's hear about Michael Schumakkereringstein? (Can't spell German)
After Rossi lapped Two seconds over his record at Mugello, he hopped on a Duke GP bike and in typical tin top fashion struggled to come within 24 seconds of Rossi's record.
How is this guy earning more than the Doctor?
And now Rossi's gone and put to shame another world motorsport champ in Colin McRae. I think he could go anywhere he wants to.......they should put him on the Italian world cup team next

Ducati never revealed Schumacher's time so all the "reports" we have read are false. Randy Mamola does an article every few weeks for Alpinestars and since he works with Ducati he was in charge of helping Schumacher adapt to the machine and giving advice. He claims the 22 or 24 seconds off Rossi's pace is nothing more than speculation. He said Schumacher really opened the thing up and put up some decent times (considerably faster than 24 seconds down on Rossi's lap record), even rode with the carbon brakes.

It sounded good though. Well no one told me. Anyway the point is Rossi could win an F1 championship, but I seriously doubt Schey could make an impact on a bike. That's just the way it its. If you as me it comes down to the basic fact that is true for (practically) all motorcyclists: "Motorbike riders make better car drivers." When you ride a bike youre a lot more in touch with the machine than you are in a car, which makes you better in a car coz you can appreciate that detail.

Note: The above does not apply to parking, I've recently discovered that my style of "Leave it where it fits" dosen't work in a car

excellent point on no.1...

on no.2

Completely agree Richo, Rossi could possibly win the F1 WDC but no F1 driver will ever win a MotoGP world championship.
