<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (michaelm @ Mar 27 2008, 10:00 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>Maybe both rossi and stoner are sick of journalists trying to beat up their rivalry; I don't recall many spontaneous recent comments directly referring to rossi from stoner either.

Well you must also remember that ATM it would not be really apt for Rossi to be commenting about any stoner rivalry ... it would be making oneself too easy a target. Stoner has new rivals and results have showed that.

However I do assume should that change as the season progresses I'm sure we will see a more confident Rossi, who can justifiably comment on Stoner.

At present, as far as 2008 goes, yes .... and Lorenzo are some of his nearby rivals ..... its too early and the interview was a kind of non-event really because of that.

Good points, but what kind of "event" were you expecting - should interviews only be given when the season is well underway?

Some common sense - Thank You!

The answers were no doubt Rossi's - it is easy to recognize his typical style even after 2 or 3 levels of editing/translation.

Rossi did not mention Stoner because he was not asked about him, but in other post-Quatar interviews he had no problems in speaking of him when asked.

But the really interesting point is that now both Stoner and Rossi are agreeing on who is their main rival - they both named Pedrosa! Do they know something we don't, or they just prefer not to mention the real rival who's on their minds?

Rossi can't win. He mentions Stoner, and he's an ........ He does NOT mention Stoner, and he's an ........

Brilliant.

Well they are living the WC right now ...... at the moment after 1 round the current points standings are:

Stoner
Lorenzo
Pedrosa
Dovi
Rossi
Toseland

......

I don't know if you remember any series racing, but the moment it came to the racing having started .... all speculation was pretty much out the window .....

The here and now suggests Stoners nearest rivals are .......... and Rossi's Rivals are .......

But also the question was delibertaely around the Pedrosa/Lorenzo thing and Spain .... running up to Jerez.

If the question, to Rossi, was specifically "who do you see as the best chance for the WC in 08" ... I'm pretty sure he would have answered Stoner ....... it was Rossi after all who was the first to be applauding Stoners efforts last year ......

<

Pedrosa was no. 2 in 07 .... further data has shown that he is the next "non-rookie" to be challenging Stoner .... the real question is ..... can Lorenzo surprize us?

Both are possible, but I think it is always worthwhile to consider the possibility that people are actually telling the truth. If honda get their act together pedrosa may be on not just an equal but a superior bike, and if his qatar bike really represents a new direction that was developed in a week honda may be in the process of doing so.
