This just in from Yamaha:

Yamaha Factory Racing joins forces with JTI and CAMEL

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. Announces the start of a new partnership with JT International (JTI), a subsidiary of Japan Tobacco Inc., whose brand CAMEL will become the new title sponsor of Yamaha's Factory MotoGP Team for 2006.

The Yamaha Factory MotoGP Team, consisting of reigning-World Champion Valentino Rossi and his team-mate Colin Edwards, will be known as the "Camel Yamaha Team" in 2006.

Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing Lin Jarvis commented "Yamaha is very excited to enter into this new partnership with JTI. JTI has been involved in motorsport at the highest level for many years and has been an active sponsor at the top level in the MotoGP class for the past three seasons. We look forward to working with JTI to enhance the respective images of our brands and to challenge together for victory, as Yamaha enters its "next 50 years" and aims to retain its MotoGP titles in 2006."

"A new chapter in the history of Camel in motorsport is just beginning", commented Roberto Zanni, JTI's Regional President for Europe, "After three years of great satisfaction in the premier class of the World Road Racing Championship, we are today launching a new challenge for the title. Our new partnership with Yamaha, the historic, championship-winning Japanese manufacturer, will be highly motivating for us and it will be an honour to be by their side throughout the 2006 season. We share the same passion and desire for victory and, I am sure, success will not be long in coming."

The Camel Yamaha Team will begin its 2006 campaign in Sepang, Malaysia with a three-day test on 23rd, 24th and 25th January.

correction the same e-mail !

Yamaha must not care too much about finances or else Camel have paid more than expected because there is a clause in the Yamaha/Altadis contract that states should Yamaha abandon the sponsorship from Altadis while still under contract they cannot sign for any direct competition. I'm no law student but it seems as though Yamaha have breeched contract twice with Altadis and will end up paying for it in court. Not even Rossi will save them this time.

How news travels fast, just came to post the news just arrived via my email

Deffo gonna be interseting on the legal aspect, hopefully it wont damage our beloved sport!

i dont get it i thought rossi was playing a bigger part in all of this by saying he didnt want to be sponsored by cigs?

Whats the point in ditching one for the other? especially biaggis old brand?

This eliminates the theories about Yamaha dumping Gauloises because Rossi didn't want tobacco sponsorship, and the one about Rossi 'cleaning' his image before going to MARLBORO Ferrari.

Now the Yamaha/Gauloises breakup is a total mistery. The only thing clear, is that Gauloises will sue Yamaha, and that they will probably win it, so Yamaha is going to have to pay a LOT of money to Gauloises.

I wonder why Yamaha swapped sponsors

I'm thinking Rossi will excersise his clause that says he can't have tobacco sponsorship. That will make him a "private" team and have two "factory" slots open for Edwards and possibly Checa??

Unless they said Rossi was going to use those colors. Some rumors suggest he changed sponsors because Rossi loves the color yellow and wanted to be mean to Biaggi by taking his old sponsor away and is a way of being a prick to Biaggi.

I would assume there are deeper issues than Rossi not wanting to be sponsored by tobacco companies. If that really were the case Yamaha would have found someone else. I suspect Camel have signed a contract that would put their name on Rossi's bike, otherwise they are just another sponsor as they were with Pons Honda. The whole stealing Max's sponsor stuff I don't believe, Valentino and Max is all just played up by the media anyway. Something happened between Gauloises and Yamaha in 2005 and neither side has gone public with it. Something that secrative is bound to be a huge story when it comes to fruit in the courts.

Just got this through the emither:

GAULOISES RELEASE

GAULOISES KRONOS
A NEW CHALLENGE FOR GAULOISES

After two seasons crowned by two world championship titles in MotoGP, GAULOISES will participate in the FIA 2006 World Rally Championship besides the KRONOS team and his two drivers, Sébastien LOEB, the reigning world champion, and his team mate Xavi PONS.

Delighted to be able to take up this new challenge for the conquest of a new world title, the French brand of the Altadis group will be present on the two Citroen Xsara of the KRONOS team from the Monte Carlo rally, first round of the FIA 2006 WRC championship, which will be held from the 20 to the 22 of January.

ALTADIS REQUESTS ARBITRATION TO RESOLVE ITS DISPUTE WITH YAMAHA

Altadis has initiated arbitration proceedings, seeking substantial compensation from Yamaha for the damages arising out of what Altadis considers to be a material breach by Yamaha of the two companies' two-year sponsorship agreement.

Altadis seeks both pecuniary damages and declaratory relief with respect to particular obligations that Altadis maintains have survived the termination of the parties' contractual relationship.

Altadis has requested an urgent decision in this regard, in the nature of an interim order obligating Yamaha to refrain from collaborating with any sponsor whose products compete directly with Altadis products for the coming season.

Altadis regrets that the negotiations to define the terms of a settlement that would have resolved the dispute without the need to resort to arbitration have proved fruitless.

I tolda ya !

Gauloises has let their lawyers loose to hunt down Yamaha.

Sponsoring the Kronos team is quite a risky bussiness, Seb Loeb is great but without official backing from Citroën what will they will be able to with a year old car?

Yamaha have sent out another release today that claims they had legally terminated any deal for Altadis sponsorship in 2006 so they are not in breach of any contract in that regard. They have also said that there was no clause that stated Yamaha could not have a sponsor that competed directly with Gauloises so the new Camel deal also does not breach their agreement. Finally, Yamaha have claimed that they have not been contacted to be brought into arbitration by Altadis. It sounds as though Altadis is bitter about losing the world championship machine, team and rider and are venting their frustration by using slander against Yamaha. Perhaps Yamaha won't get eaten alive in court after all. Read the entire release courtesy of www.superbikeplanet.com here.

Press Release just in! - ..... fight huh!

FAILED NEGOTIATIONS PROMPTED ARBITRATION

Contrary to the information provided by Yamaha in its January 10th press release, Altadis' decision to initiate arbitration proceedings was taken --as Yamaha well knows-- after many months of negotiations during which Altadis sought ways to release Yamaha from its obligations to Altadis.

Altadis would like MOTOGP and motor sports fans worldwide to know that Altadis' commitment to motor racing and MOTOGP remains as strong as ever.
Altadis sincerely believes that its decision to seek redress in arbitration for what Altadis considers to be Yamaha's wrongful conduct is good for the sport, which can only benefit from rulings that require participants to honor their contractual undertakings.

Altadis is confident that its position, which it believes advocates the survival of fair play in professional motorcycle racing, will be vindicated in arbitration.
As Yamaha has been formally notified of the initiation of
the proceedings, Altadis' response to Yamaha's allegations concerning the dispute will be given to the Arbitral Tribunal, who will have the final say.

I have always heard that Rossi didn't want to be sponsored by tobacco companies but I recently read that it was mainly a rumor because there is no evidence that Rossi himself has ever said that.

I guess it's no longer an issue.
