Yesterday on my day off , i started watching the races from the 2009, starting with Spies getting punted on the second turn of his very first race, then coming back for a win in race 2. Then came the double wins at Qatar and the next thing i knew, it was 4am. The racing was just unbelievable, with countless races that came down to the last lap, and many to the last corner corner. Spies and Haga, Spies and Biaggi, Spies and Rea. So many ups and downs for the title contenders and their fans, you almost needed medicine to make it thru. Even knowing how it turned out, i still sat and watched race after race and could not believe how many times the season turned and how dramatic it was. Spies gets punted in race 1, ah well , welcome to the big league my boy. Didnt mean much at the moment because no one had any idea what was in store for the rest of the season.

For Spies and his fans, it was agonizing, for every time he took 2 steps forward, he took a step back, or in most cases was yanked back by a bumbling crew, or an overzealous competitor. The same for Haga and his fans, except most of his wounds were self inflicted.

Spies is punted out of huge points in his very first race. Probable win considering his performance in race 2

His team cost him huge points when they forget to refill the tank after a red flag restart. 100% certain win

Shots himself at Assen with a mistake while leading, costing himself possible win, wins race of the year in race 2. Side by side with Haslam for 4 corners to take second on next to last lap and the overtake of Haga with just a couple of turns to go.

Shifter issue while leading a race cost him valuable points and possible win

Fabrizio torpedoed him out of the race 1 at Brno while leading, more huge points and a possible or probable win.

Then you have poor Nori. Life is good until a seagull changes your life forever. I never thought about it at the time, but Spies was on pole for that race but Nori's jack rabbit start from 5th played against him in this cruel twist. He took the hit as the leader that could have easily been Spies. The bird strike leads to numb arm, that leads to spectacular end over end crash.Another spectacular crash at Donnington Park leaves him battered and bruised but he more or less holds serve at Brno thanks to his dip .... teammate. At Germany, he loses big points and the championship lead when he and Rea get together dicing for the lead. To me that was semi self inflicted, hard to blame Rea,when Haga did run wide. He then recovers and retakes the points lead only to toss it away in the last event of the year at Portimao. Even in the last race, when Spies was cruising, looking for a hole to settle in, it was nail biting time. Biaggi just wouldt leave him alone. It was like he was matching Spies slower pace on purpose. Spies would let him go, and Max would come back to him. Finally he got so paranoid about Biaggi and what he might be up to, he picked up the pace and left him in the dust just to get away from him.

My wife came in the room at around 9pm and said what race are you watching, it sure is taking a long time. Not wanting her to know that i have spent most of the day and all night watching races from last year, i tell her its an endurance race from this past weekend
