A buddy of my told me that Real Sports on HBO did a segment on the Isle of Man TT recently. Here is the intro. I couldn't find the entire episode on youtube. If somebody finds it somewhere, please add it here for us to discuss. Real Sports usually does these kinds of segments real well, so I'm curious to see what they had to say.

Synopsis:

The Isle of Man, a 226-square mile island in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland, hosts motorcycle racing's most prestigious event, the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, but the competition has been under heavy scrutiny for safety concerns since it began in 1907. The Snaefell Mountain Course, where the race is held during the final week of May and the first week of June, has resulted in 237 deaths, and the event was stripped of its world championship status in 1976. REAL SPORTS correspondent Jon Frankel travels to the British Isles to learn more about this prominent, very dangerous, race.

Dude def, i watched that movie for the first time and i think i watched it at least once a week for 2 months lol ..........that being said if anyone does find that link def post it

I watched the whole segment. It was the first time i ever heard of "Mad Sunday" on the island, where anyone can come and ride the course as fast as they want. This elderly couple who race a side cart truly stole the show. the lady was like 65 and the man 72 and they were saying how much they enjoy racing. I figure that will be Chopper and Bonnie in a few years

if somebody knows where we can watch it please share

Guess which one will be the rider and which the monkey?

....... crazy mofos.

Watched segment. Pretty good as usual by Real Sports. They kept it rather evenhanded. It was like a 'get to know this crazy island and its traditional race.' Good stuff. Quote of the segment for me was "and if you .... it up, youre in somebody's front yard..."

I watched two clips from youtube about TT, fantastic ballsy stuff, One of the clips was Valentino Rossi and Giacomo Agostini riding in the road with two R1's back in 2009.

What was really interesting for me was the debate that was happening in the comments comparing the skill of TT riders and Motogp riders.

What is powerslide members opinion about it:

1) Is it logical to compare these two catagories and their riders skills compared to each other?

2) Is it worth to start a topic about it?

In my opinion no. Comparing Stoner or Rossi to a guy like John McGuinness is like comparing Luis Hamilton and Michael Shumacher to a guy like Sebastian Loeb. Two different categories each one needing different packages of skill, consistency, focus and balls.

Agreed, it may seem like the same sport but its 2 complete different things. Different machinery to begin with and very different race courses

none the less imense respect for all parties involved in both race series

Im sure everybody dreams of a bad ............ who can jump on any bike and win both races but thats not possible anymore (agostini)

i don't think mcguiness improvises ,where as loeb does.

what i'm trying to say is rallying is a totally different sport compared to racing on asphalt, road racing even like the TT and the northwest 200 is comparable to motogp when it comes to just the riding itself

i say the gp riders are talent wise a step better because they are able to give it 100% for 30 laps, nearly crashing every corner and getting it perfectly right.also see how good the road racers do in superbikes etc. i'm gonna lean out the window a bit and say the last time a real world class rider in terms of normal course riding rode the TT was foggy

road racing is different, those guys don't ride 100% because it would guarantee you have an off at least once every year. even the smoothest riders crash every now and then in gps trying to get it perfectly right.crash 5 times in 5 years on a road course and theres a good chance you'll die sooner than later.

the special skill of the road racers in my mind is block out the fear and be maximum fast while only being at say 80% because other than knowing "i could go maybe 2mph faster in that corner" they have no safety margin. also i have huge respect for them being able to stay concentrated for so long.

In the clip I mentioned in my last post in this thread Rossi said one of the big differences between Motogp and TT is that in TT your worst rival and enemy is the road while in motogp riders compete and race with each other. But the TT riders sure got a lot of skill, focus and balls. So many many kudos and respect for them.

that goes without saying, i was just talking about the motorcycle cornering skill alone.

road racing requires that maybe not as much as gps but it does require additional skill like being concentrated longer and block out the lamp posts, estimating whats the best speed to take different sections.

100% sure most really fast riders ride arrabiata 1 and 2 at 99% until they have a wobble or even crash and then know, ok this is how fast i can go.

no way thats the approach to balagary! (hope i spelled that right, isle of man english sure is weird for someone that reads ordinary english as a forein language

)

Totally Agreed. I think now days Motogp is more technical in the terms of bike technology and performance and it is not just about racing. Its testing and improving lap by lap. and that is what makes it cool. while TT is more of rider based thing (just like the old motogp with no electronics) just pure adrenaline and racing.
