Wow. Was so busy with work and personal matters that I completely forgot the 2010 MGP season opener was this past weekend.
<

Anyway, was really surprised that Stoner crashed and threw the race away. Interesting to note that Rossi's bike wasn't at its best but still held off the opposition. Well done.

Felt bad for Nicky, so close but no cigar. I may be a Pedrosa fan, but I do give credit when credit is due.
<
Speaking of Dani, I'm not too disappointed with his finish, as he seems to be uncompetitive at Qatar . I'm excited to see that the Hondas seem to have improved, though.

As for Spies, well...good to see that my prediction of a Top5 finish for the first race many moons ago came true!

oh! the special powers working again

i remember saying yesterday something like

"Don't ask me why but tomorrow is rossi's day. I just have a gut feeling rossi will out perform stoner"

It will be really interesting to see what happens over the next 8 rounds for Spies. He's only raced at Assen. If he can hold station at the next races, he will be in a great position to do something good.

Stoner himself was actually quoted on one site pre -race implying he wasn't all that keen to win, I think in view of the fact that his easy wins in 2008 and 2009 in the end did not portend success in the championship.

Not being a morning person I have not seen the race.

But I am a mourning person now

Oh Casey, Casey, Casey............that was a big waste. Shows how Rossi rode to what he could realistically achieve and surpassed his expectations.....well done.

Somebody accidentally gave Nicky the fast Ducati
<

Excellent riding from Dovi, Hayden and Spies.

Pedrosas weekend reminded me of Haydens first race 2007. Does it mean a crap year for Pedrosa in 2010.
kama??

Perhaps casey thinking the bike was shaping up like the gp07 thought he was on 2007 tyres as well.

Crashing 2 races in a row albeit on different bikes is a worry, but he didn't really make any other riding errors last year. If he does have a bike potentially capable of 2007-type dominance, ezy might be glad he crashed, as another year like 2007 would be box-office poison however much you and I might enjoy it. I am sure rossi/jb/yamaha will improve their bike, but the empty tank on the slow-down lap suggests rossi was telling the truth about being on the fuel economy limit pre-race.

25 points down is already a problem, potentially requiring 5 races at the minimum to redress; when stoner apparently had a pace advantage for several races in 2008 rossi was more than capable of remaining error-free and finishing second in every race he didn't win.

Dont get me wrong, i am impressed with spies as i was only thinking of a top 10 for him. so to come 5th is impressive but not anywhere near as good as some of his fans were proclaiming his was going to be..

Damn, tough crowd. Was fastest satellite by far, beat De puniet by 5 1/2 seconds.Beat his teammate by 16 seconds, finished in front of 2 factory rides that were still running, ran the 3rd fastest lap of the race on the 17th lap and was faster than Hayden and Dovi the last 1/3 of the race.Like i said, had he not botched qualifying, he could have easily gotten 3rd in ths race. Not to mention he beat the next best rookie by 17 seconds. He finished about where i thought he would ,
5-6th. I will take that.

Some of you are too quick to write off Spies... remember this is his rookie season (kind of)

Not even Vale won it his first time.

Colin sucks at Qatar. If Spies continues to beat him in Europe, it will be time to roll out the red carpet.

Anyone see this quote from Casey

Once I got to the front I started to get into my rhythm but I lost the front end a couple of times in long corners so I made the decision to try to ride a bit smoother and not put so much pressure on the front tyre with the full tank. Unfortunately that is what led to the crash because looking at the telemetry I didn’t have enough load on the front, so I guess in hindsight I should have stuck to the way I’d been riding all weekend.

Is he done?
He would seem to me to desperately need to see a new formula, particularly if the litre bikes resemble 990s, but may not last till then on current form.

From MotoGP.Com http://www.motogp.com/en/news/2010/stoner+...er+losail+crash

After dominating every session over the weekend at the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar, a mistake when leading the race saw Casey Stoner lose the opportunity to wrap up a first win of the 2010 season.

“The bike closed up at the front a few times but I had managed to control it, so I tried to make the turns more open. However, in the sixth lap, when I lost the front there was absolutely nothing I could do to control it. It was a big mistake, a stupid one,” said Stoner.

It was a slip that has made for a testing start to the Ducati Marlboro rider’s season. Reigning World Champion, fellow title favourite and one of his main rivals Valentino Rossi went on to win the race, but Stoner is remaining philosophical about the situation.

“Let’s look at it this way: Last year I started the Championship very well and ended it badly. Now we can do it the other way around. Without doubt no points from the first race is the worst start, but on the other hand my Ducati has improved a lot and Hayden confirmed that with his fourth place. It was a real shame that Nicky did not make the podium.”

Just imagine Stoner stays on bike and Rossi pushes hard to get him...

Rossi out of fuel in last lap then?

OMFG! This could be a big problem over the season!

What an excellent race, and a few surprising results.

I'm glad Nicky Hayden did so well, lets hope there is more to come.

Wot a race totally sickened for Casey and Loris. Great job to all top ten. Spies really impressed. Give Spies Lorenzos M1, give Pedders Rcv to someone who can ride it like Lorenzo he rode a real smart and patient race. Thank you Budda for Motogp

Valentino Rossi - Position: 1st - Time: 42'50.099

I ran out of fuel on the slow down lap, I think I used more than expected early on because I was sliding quite a lot, but it was very funny to come to Parc Ferme riding a scooter!"

so no engine prob as such..??????

By Toby Moody and Matt Beer
Rossi's Yamaha stopped on the slowing down lap after he had taken the chequered flag, but he believed that was a fuel issue rather than a late failure.

"I think I spun the wheels too much during the race so I used more fuel, and I think I finished my fuel on the end lap," he explained. "But it's like Mr Ferrari said, the perfect racecar is the car that breaks right after the line..."
