Hi everyone, I've been posting here for a few weeks but was informed I should introduce myself in this forum. I got into MotoGP because of my husband. I had never heard of any of the riders, or even the sport, until 7 years ago when we got married. Even then, I would dutifully watch races with him and try to share the excitement, but it wasn't until I decided I liked Casey Stoner as a rider that I began to develop my own interest in the sport. It was a sad day for me when he retired, but happy for my husband who is a lifelong VR fan. We were a house divided for awhile and I had to pick someone new to follow. I wavered back and forth for awhile, ultimately deciding on Nicky Hayden because he seemed like an underdog at the time. I didn't want to become a fan of Vale simply because my husband is, or because he's a more popular rider.
However, no matter how great a person I think Nicky Hayden is, or how much respect I have for him and his family (especially after reading Earl's book), it got depressing pulling for someone who never won.
So I started watching interviews with other riders and doing research. I never cared for Lorenzo's attitude or antics after a win. Marquez seemed too new to jump on board with. I appreciate a lot of the riders but ultimately, I joined forces with my husband and made him a very happy man the day I declared I was going to start pulling for Valentino.
Going to our first race at Indy last year helped nurture my interest in the sport. I am definitely someone who appreciates a sport much more live. It's too bad we aren't rich and can't go to all the races.
I do think VR is an incredible rider. But, and perhaps this is a woman thing, what draws me to him is his personality. He seems to try to get along with everyone and separate what happens on the track from what goes on off the track. He just truly LOVES riding and I think that is his greatest appeal to me.
Sorry this is so wordy. I might be banned from ever posting again.
Thanks for having me. Looking forward to engaging in more discussions as the season wraps up, and beyond.
