Sources in Europe this afternoon confirm that Italian Marco Melandri has agreed to ride the ex-Kawasaki MotoGP bikes this season. Insiders suggest that Dorna will run the team independently and the bikes will be not be branded with the Kawasaki logo.

Dorna is attempting to acquire the Kawasaki machines and run them through a self-sponsored effort in 2009.

....... joke. Put a piece of .... motorbike there just to make up the numbers. No factory input on a bike that was already by far the worst on the grid. Are these clowns from dorna clutching at straws or what?

This is EXACTLY what I thought when I read this. I mean WTF, at least when KR had a decent engine they were competitive. One thing the Kwaker seems to have is a decent engine. KR could put a killer chassis on the thing.

Also, my other thoughts were, why Melandri and not Hopkins? I find Marco to be a bit weak minded and thin skinned. This is the wrong guy for a sub par machine. Hopkins would be the more appropriate attitude guy, afterall, he knows a thing or two about being on ...... bikes.

This is twice as disastrous as a bad season on Ducati.
Don't do it Marco.
Stay home and do your local Superbike Championship and try to link up with another factory team in MotoGP in 2010.

It's gotta be a joke.....doesn't it?

Do it Marco. The comedic relief of you crying like a baby on your web diary will be worth it for me.

Assuming they are both highly overrated riders (which I think Hopkins is far more than Melandri) Melandri has won a 250 championship, and has been Motogp runner up, 4th and 5th in recent years on a satellite bike. What, exactly, has Hopper done better than him? IMO and I will never tire of saying it, Hopper is the most highly overrated rider to grace to Motogp grid in recent years.

Call me crazy but I'd like Marco to head to Suzuki next year. IMO he is twice the racer/rider Hopkins is. Capirossi becomes team coach or something and Marco climbs on board...yep I like the thought a lot. I was pissed when he didn't come to Suzuki a couple of years ago and wasted a whole year at Ducati. To keep in shape he must race in MotoGP any way he can this year.

you are crazy.

you need a mentally tough rider to deal with the convoluted performance of the gsv, not one whos mental fortitude is questionable. no thank you! there is a real possibility that suzuki will be looking for 2 new riders next season (2010) with both CV and LC on one year contracts and i hope MM doesnt get either seat.

I would assume because Melandri brings with him more attention and potential sponsors. Both riders are a bit overrated but Hopkins comes from a place with relatively no money outside the industry sunk into the sport. If given the choice between two mediocre riders, one from a place where motorcycle racing is mainstream, the other comes from a place where dragging Harleys is more popular than grand prix, I think it's quite an easy decision.

It seems Kawasaki have honoured all their 2009 contracts with technical crew, which means that whoever runs this team is not going to have to foot the salary bill for any of the crew. Not bad that for whoever takes over.

I agree. I've mentioned before and am still of the opinion that it's quite likely that with Dorna's clout the team could very well pick up a large Spanish sponsor. And having already been on Fortuna and Movistar-sponsored teams in the past Melandri has quite a bit more exposure in Spain and is far more likely to attract the cash.

YEP so true, maybe im wrong but im sure i did watch something when team KR was racing about how they manufactured there own swing arm and chassis and i was very impressed... now thats alot of graft for a small team impressive in my book....

i think ur rite about marco to hes a good rider but dam the guy is a baby and gives in to easy.

dorna should have done more when the sport started to decline instead of waiting untill the .... has almost hit the fan.
it pissed me off when i read about dorna trying to bail out kwak i thought to myself WTF bail out some huge comapny and they just let KR rot in the background wtf is that about...

Voice of reason.

I don't get all the love for a guy who said while on the Honda, he would NOT try to gain positions in a race because he was angry with Honda's development. Then cried about it, yes literally NOT metaphorically for the world to see. But hey, whatever.

Yes you are right. Thing is, I just don't believe Marco is mentally tough.

I don't either but I don't think Dorna are hoping for much of anything. They know the bike/team/rider will have NO chance of doing anything so they're looking for someone who is more likely to attract sponsors and investors.
