Colin Edwards has confirmed to MCN that he has agreed to join British rider James Toseland in the Tech 3 Yamaha squad for the 2008 MotoGP world championship.

Edwards has held meetings with Yamaha Racing Managing Director Lin Jarvis and Tech 3 boss Herve Poncharal in the Czech Republic this weekend, and he’s verbally agreed an offer to join former Castrol Honda team-mate Toseland next season.

Edwards has been assured he will get the same factory support as he currently receives in the Fiat Yamaha team in what is effectively a loan deal, with Yamaha understood to paying the double World Superbike champion's contract.

Yamaha have moved the Texan to accommodate reigning world 250 champion Jorge Lorenzo as Valentino Rossi’s official factory team-mate.

One thing not clear is whether Edwards and Toseland will be on Michelin or Bridgestone tyres, though it seems most likely that Tech 3 will end its relationship with Dunlop to switch to Michelin.

Speaking to MCN this afternoon, Edwards said final details of his one-year contract were still being finalised, including the make up of his crew, but he had agreed a deal.

“I’m pretty happy with it. Actually I’m excited. We haven’t agreed on all the numbers on that but the idea and the situation, yeah I’ve agreed. Yamaha basically said we’ll take care of you but we want you to ride for Tech 3. That was the scenario and I’m happy with that. I’ve always got on great with Herve and I know most of the guys in the team because I’ve been right next door to them, “said Edwards, who said he is looking forward to a reunion with Toseland, who recently announced he was quitting World Superbikes to join the Tech 3 squad.

“James and I get along great and we’ve been team-mates before. It will be an easier transition for him and I’ll share everything I’ve got with him to help him out."
Edwards said his plan was to finish in his MotoGP career with Yamaha at the end of next season, before returning to America to ride for the Japanese factory in the AMA superbike series for two years.

“That would be my dream scenario. I don’t have any interest to ride for another manufacturer, “he added.

Poncharal confirmed to MCN yesterday that he was closing in on a deal to land Edwards.

“Colin is a really nice guy and he is still a top rider. I think Colin and James would be a strong team. The first time I talked to him was in Assen and I went to his motorhome and we spoke a little bit. He told me his position and he was waiting to know what was Yamaha’s decision. But he was having absolutely no objection to work with us. His desire was to try to remain to stay with Yamaha. Since then we spoke briefly in Laguna Seca and we exchanged a few text messages during the summer. I’m pretty sure Yamaha offered him a seat in our team but I have to wait until I’m told. Once we will know Yamaha is willing to do that I have to know what Colin thinks and then see how it can be done.”

Colin giving JT advice?

His career's over before it's even started!

And this pretty much confirms that Tech3 will have Michelin, Colin says he only works with them.

Well another one falls into place, and i can't say i blame Yamaha for wanting to keep him around. Now i just hope Guintoli can find a decent ride, these seats are filling up fast.

Guintoli deserves a decent ride imo, but I don't think it'll happen in MotoGP. Maybe he should give superbikes a try, as long as he can get a good seat.

So...
Tamada is gone - I wonder if he will try to get Checa's job at the LCR Honda?
Maybe Guintoli will bounce to the LCR team. How about that? Can't be any worse than the Dunlop/M1.

Now... CEII. This guys has a million lives. I must say that it sounds like nice guys do get breaks. It appears that CEII has accepted that he would always be 2nd fiddle to Rossi and Now has accepted his role as mentor to Toseland.

Thus my hope is CEII comes back to the states and eats Mladin's lunch and dinner.

I really would have liked to see him go back to WSBK to battle with Bayliss for his last year. They had some great racing before they both jumped to MotoGp.
For the 2nd year in a row I am really suprised he kept his seat.
He hasn't been competitive enough and with young guys like
Guintoli coming up I think he should lose his seat before them.
Interesting that he wants to go back to AMA after next year.
I just wonder if the R1 will be developed enough to compete with the
Gixx. It certainly would put a spark in a redundant series.
Teammate and mentor to Josh Herrin?
I'm salivating!

Rossi. and. Lorenzo.......
<

That is gonna be a sight to see. Is Rossi really OK with this? Maybe he'll pull a surprise move to a 3rd Ducati or something.
<
I honestly cannot imagine those two in the same garage. They'll be fighting with each other over who gets to wave at the camera and make an ... of himself first.

I see your smily there but seriously: Of course CE has loads of information that is worth a lot for JT. Actually I think this is tha best that could happen to JT when the Tech3 deal was done. He gets into a familiar eviroment with CT that know all the tracks and Michelin in and out.

The Rossi/Lunatic combo will be interesting. On Eurosport they speculated in two separate teams, Luntic with his current spansors. That might bring the back the sposor team mixing we saw with Yamaha som years ago, as Edwards might keep the Fiat colors?

You're kidding! I'd back Mladin anyday! Damn shame that we won't see it in 2008!

All we get now is having to watch him go through the motions again in 2008 ...

Forget the tyre war ... get some hungry riders on board if you want a more interesting series in 2008 ... riders that aren't overpaid to underachieve!

Coo. Another year of Colin.

Rossi and Lorentho on a "team". Damn, I think this globalwarming thing is ....... up even MotoGP.

Rossi and Lorenzo will each have their own one man teams.. Thats my guess.. Maybe one of them running Bridgestones..

Is Colin not well liked amongest you guys? I find him a nice guy, and a DECENT rider.

Kinda hard not to back anyone on a Yosh Suzuki.

In the end I'm not that surprised Colin stayed. At first the line about maintaining full factory support sounds like rhetoric, but if you think about it Colin will probably still be Rossi's development rider for the M1.

This move sounds like a beautiful marriage of political nonsense and good old fashioned common sense. The common sense is easy to spot, former 125cc and former 250cc champion, Rossi, shows Lorenzo the ropes and 2x WSBK champion shows Toseland around the ropes.

The political part is somewhat speculative. When Rossi left Honda many believe it was due in part to Honda giving many teams full factory support and that Yamaha had to restrict factory support to other teams. Instead of breaking their pact with Rossi to give factory equipment to Lorenzo and JT, they put Lorenzo on the works team, and then send works technology via Edwards to Tech 3 at Rossi's request. I think the other political part is in the minds of the Yamaha team management Lorenzo>Toseland and this is a clever convoluted way to get rid of Edwards and keep Toseland for sales window dressing.

Sounds like another team I know of...........the same team that gave the reigning world champion a bike he couldn't even sit on (I'm never going to let that go). It will be interesting to see if the works Yamaha team turns out the same way--with Toseland doing all the work and Lorenzo getting all the support.

And you shouldn't. You are a smart person.

I do like Colin.

However I think he has lost some of that hunger and I don't think he will find it (again) at Tech3!

I too like Colin but how many rides are going to past their used by date riders? Waste of time giving him a ride in 2008!
I bet he doesn't podium once next year!

Depending on the tyres, how much you want to bet?
