An expert physiotherapist and osteopath assumes that the unsatisfactory results of Marc Márquez's second operation extend the times of his recovery

Marc Marquez's recovery is getting complicated and times are getting longer. If he had initially tried to get back on track just a few days after his fracture, now the Cabroncito had to give up and throw in the towel at least for the 2020. season. But it's not at all said that the reigning world champion will recover the perfect arm functionality not even on the championship finale.

A Spanish physiotherapist and osteopathic expert, Ruben Garcia Ruiz, who analyzed what happened at number 93: " The first operation

was a success and, although he seemed to have the Terminator's arm, having seen him do the pushups three days after surgery I was as stunned as anyone else ", admits to the microphones of the MotoRaceNation specialized site. " Obviously a professional athlete always has to fight to recover as soon as possible, but what we saw Marquez do was inhuman ".

But precisely this decision to force, in vain, recovery times are at the root of successive complications: "The humerus has been subjected to significant stress that led to a re-operation, which did not go well ", explains Dr. Ruiz. "We saw a picture of Marquez with a cast covering his right arm up to the first finger of his hand. And that picture tells us a lot: if re-operation was normal, that cast shouldn't have gone there, at best up to the elbow or a little lower".

Marquez second surgery failed

The Iberian doctor says that the new operation Marquez was subjected to had an unsatisfactory outcome: "I have a riskier hypothesis: the second surgery may not have gone as well as desired. The truth is that all the stress the bone has been subjected to doesn't make it easy to reposition everything in the right conditions". And for this reason it will take a long time before Marc is back in perfect shape: " Marquez will have a lot of effort to recover his elbow ", concludes Dr. Ruiz." And even if they allow him to try the 2021 prototype before the end of the season, what possible, in my opinion he should refuse, to have time to complete consolidation. If there is an important articulation for a rider, it is that of the elbow, since all the strength you need to carry the motorcycle passes through there ".

I read something similar quoting MM himself, along the lines of his mental ability to block out pain is so high he can and does over-stress his body. Thus he is trying to 'listen to his body'. In case of the arm he obviously didnt, or couldnt resist. As a competitor of his though I would find what he did intimidating, bending titanium plates and all so I understand why he did it. By the current state of affairs he obviously still has them all mentally beat, probably they fear him even more.

If the arm is in a cast that's a good thing imo, the operation to quick fix with more plates it was aborted. Healing naturally with a cast forces Marquez to accept reality, while still maintaining his mental edge.

Needs translation but says more about the perceived complications of the surgery. If this is true it's a long road back for #93.
This is the image that is causing the speculation that the second procedure was much more serious than the first (coupled with the size of the second cast he was wearing)

To get that screw in the centre of the bone like that means that they have had to go through the end of the elbow...

That looks awful. Good luck to him, hope there is no other long term damage beyond the break.....

Is that his X-ray, and if so how did it get into the public domain ?.

If it is not good, the bone looks completely separated and he did re-fracture it as this wasn't the case initially.

It apparently is, it was leaked but neither Marc, his team, Honda or the Dr's involved have confirmed or denied it as far as I can tell.

That's what the above article is about, they have medical experts review the x-ray and then the photos of Marc's cast(s) and the X-Ray very much matches with the cast(s) he's been photoed in.

Basically, they were saying that he would not need to be wearing the finger to elbow cast that he has been (complete immobilisation) if the second operation was as advertised.

The fact that he's having to take such a large amount of time off would seem to indicate that is not just the simple arm break it was originally. Even having the plate changed wouldn't warrant that much downtime...

But no-one outside of Marc's inner circle knows for sure

Shouldn’t be out without MM’s or his camp’s approval, medical confidentiality breach if it has been so released which is what I was implying.

Fits with known history, and is presumably the X-ray prior to his 2nd operation, and shows the plate to have actually broken and the humerus to be non-contiguous at the site of fracture which was not reportedly the case when he broke it in the first place. Rather unlikely to be the result of opening a window it could be said.

He faces a fairly lengthy period of complete immobilisation to heal a fracture like that imo, then a further long period of rehabilitation starting from scratch to regain the musculature/muscle strength in that arm when it does heal.

For comparison, I found an old image of the arm in between breaks - with the screws in the right place and the plate before it broke. It does look like the x-ray Macca posted is Marc's, once he'd "opened the window"

Must have been some window...

Looks like a humerus with the same fixation devices in the X-ray you posted, but fracture now completely separated on the second X-ray and the plate obviously broken.

The window was the straw that broke the camel's back. Honda is trying to deflect cause/effect away from his coming back too early to make it seem that the titanium plate broke from fresh with him simply opening a window. The plate broke after repeated stress from his premature comeback.

To apply a plate you need to strip the periosteum from the bone. The periosteum is what is responsible for the generation of callus and consequent healing. Each time they fiddle with with the injury there is the risk of non-union. What's the point of a beautiful plating with non-union? All of this adds up to not upsetting the apple cart any further. Ensure union before moving forward. A very sensible approach after a regrettable decision to allow him to race.

I don't know if there was an operation that went badly. It's more likely that what they did in the second operation was all that they could do to ensure the greatest likelihood of bone union/healing. What we do know is that it was a poor decision to allow him to race. I was shocked to see him there to be honest. I would have been shocked to hear that the plating stood up to the punishment of what he did in the buildup and during the race weekend. It's bone and not a plate that heals continuously and especially during a night's sleep. He likely just went about his business with the plating as recommended and it finally gave up the ghost while opening a window.
