Michael Rutter has taken provisional pole position in the opening qualifying session for the 40th running of the Macau Grand Prix.
The 33-year-old BSB star lapped his Stobart Honda in 2.27.99, over two seconds clear of his second-placed Stobart Honda teammate, Ian Hutchinson. Steve Plater (AIM Yamaha) was third fastest and American racer Jeremy Toye was a surprise fourth on the Lees Cycle Racing Suzuki.
Scottish rider Keith Amor was the best newcomer in 14th on the DMR Racing Suzuki 600cc.
The opening free practice was hampered by damp patches on the track after heavy rain on Wednesday but there were no crashes.
Although he voiced concern about “the young guns at his heels” Rutter has put himself into a great position to become the most successful Macau rider ever. He is bidding to win for the seventh time to overtake the six wins that he shares with Ron Haslam.

Yep.
Its an infamous road race.
Its on the streets ala Isle of Mann and has big walls that scare the crap out of riders.

Balls are needed to go fast there!!

run off........ what run off!!!! .... u go down there ur hittin somethin!

I was watching Mr Prixau take the WTCC championship (again) at maccau tonight - it's scary even for the cars. It must be a crazy old journey on a bike - like Hector said - it's the TT between Armco instead of dry stone walls.

the image below is plater leading rutter to the line

and this is mc guiness - just before missing a gear at 160mph and putting himself into orbit.......

afterwards, mc guiness was asked about it and he said.........

"I completely sht myself!”

can't argue with that.

macau isn't quite the TT but it's still great to watch. 160mph between Armco is just wrong.

mc guiness was lucky to walk away - well i say walk but......
