Trifecta in the dirt
Sally Boxall | 13th October 2009
MOTOR SPORT: Young Mackay motorcycle ace Luke Burgess claimed a trifecta at the Queensland Dirt Track Titles in Ayr at the weekend.
Burgess, 15, won the state title in three different classes - the 85-150cc junior class, the 100-150cc 2 stroke class and the elite 13-16 years 250 Lites class.
Each title was made up of five races and Burgess managed to win every race in every class, giving him a flawless score card.
His father Dale, the dealer principal at Mackay Kawasaki, said it was a “really, really rare” feat.
It was the second time in a few weeks that Burgess has been undefeated after winning all 15 of his races at a 50th anniversary race meet recently.
“He is exceptionally fast and exceptionally skilful,” Dale said.
The weekend's results took Burgess's Queensland title tally to four so far this year.
Burgess is also the reigning national champion in the 85-150cc junior class, and he will now focus on defending that crown at the nationals in Canberra next month.
He will also be aiming to add two more Australian titles to his name in the 10-150ccc 2 stroke and elite 13-16 years 250 Lites classes.
Burgess started racing when he was nine, after Dale bought him a bike.
He is now planning to move into the MotoGP class of racing this year.
