Spain's Jorge Lorenzo aims to extend his world championship lead on Sunday by snatching a first career Czech Grand Prix MotoGP victory.

The Spanish Yamaha rider takes a 72-point lead over compatriot Dani Pedrosa on a Honda into the event as the second half of the season kicks off following a three-week summer break.

"I love the Brno track. I have won there three times, but never in MotoGP. I've never even made the podium," said Lorenzo, refreshed after spending his vacation in the Caribbean.

Lorenzo won at Brno in the 125cc class in 2004 and then the 250cc division in 2006 and 2007, victories which helped him to back-to-back world titles in the sport's second tier contest.

In the MotoGP race last year, Lorenzo failed to score a point after failing to finish following a nasty crash although he did have the consolation of breaking the track record.

Lorenzo has been the dominant force in this year's championship, winning six of the nine races so far, a performance which has put world champion Valentino Rossi in the shade.

Rossi's hopes of lifting another world crown were shattered when he missed six weeks of the season after breaking his leg in a horror fall at Mugello in June.

As a result, Rossi is back in fifth place, 120 points behind his Yamaha teammate in the standings.

But the Italian has been widely-praised for his performances in his two comeback races, finishing fourth in Germany and third at the US Grand Prix at Laguna Seca.

"I've had a good break and it's helped me a lot to have this time to work on my physical condition," said Rossi, who took his first world championship win at Brno in the 125cc class in 1996.

"I'm feeling good about my leg and my shoulder and I hope that this weekend I'll be feeling much stronger. Brno is a great track for me and it's always special because it's the first place I ever won at," added Rossi, who also has five MotoGP wins at the circuit, including the last two seasons.

Just like Rossi, France's Honda rider Randy de Puniet is set to make a return to action just four weeks after breaking his left leg at the German Grand Prix.

GOOOOOOOO ROSSI!

Somehow I think there are at least 10 riders out of the field GOING FOR IT at every race. Unfortunately the rest of the field and even some of that 10 don't have a hope in hell's chance of making the Podium. Hat off to RdP - hope he doesn't crash and of course - absolutely without shame GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ROSSI GOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As i expected, the championship, and the lead he has in points will dictate how hard he actually goes for all out glory. Julian Rider had this little blurb in a report

"Jorge says he is now thinking about the championship and will ride accordingly".

Could be a little early to start thinking that way, but obviously they are thinking about the math. At this point, all he has to do is podium and he is virtually guaranteed the championship, unless Pedrosa wins 9 straight. Jorge has to forget about Rossi and any mythical second half championship, Pedrosa is the rider he has to mirror. If he can go for a win without riding the razors edge, he will. From here on out, we might see the opposite of the first half of the season, with a bunch of podiums and 2-3 wins.

I think you may underestimate how important the "deserve" factor is with these very competitive guys. Jorge will want to beat Rossi as many times as possible on track so his championship will be seen as deserved. Should Rossi now continually beat Jorge in the remaining races how deserved do you think jorge will feel lifting the championship trophy ? Jorge will not want to be remembered as only winning the title because Rossi broke his leg.

Good point Rog,its pretty much why Schwantz felt below par about his own title on the 500 when Wayne became injured badly.

It doesnt matter one iota, because regardless of the circumstances, no one wins a title, Rossi just loses one.

With 8-9 wins and 13-15 podiums, anyone who questions the validity of a championship is a fool, or a bopper
<

i doubt anyone will question the validity because jlo has been riding very very well this year. but it goes without saying people will wonder how would it have been had rossi not gotten injured

Well, i can wonder what would have happened last year, had JLo not crashed a couple of times, or i can wonder what if, Casey had not got a tummy ache, or if Dani had not launched himself in Germany in 2008 while leading the race, and the championship. I guess we can wonder about any title, including Rossi's

hmmmmmmn... not that i blame him as a rider, but for the spectators thats a bit crap, it means if it comes to a scrap he'll bow out for the sake of points. :/

i almost dont care about the championship. i'd rather have a bunch of good races, regardless of the result...

Racing is racing and .... happens all the time! But hopefully next year things will be more competitive! I still see lorenzo winning a few more races along with Rossi and Dani! The sad thing is no one else will win one!

You keep going at it and obviously dosn't get it at all. I've won and lost races, got lucky on my on behalf and lucky on others accidents and belive me Roger is spot on. If even the craziest booper are convinced Jorge still has to convince himself that he actually beat everyone onn, not just everyone except Rosse that were injured. This has nothing to do with boopers, that's plain ........, it's about how competetive people think and what drives them. Of cource that can vary quite a bit but it's a very fair assumption that Jorge will put in a strong effort in beating Rossi in the second half.

It didnt say , povol thinks Jorge should be thinking about the championship and ride accordingly, now does it?

Riding in a club event and competing for the ultimate prize in bike racing are totally different animals. From his statement, he realizes this is more than a .... measuring contest at the local pub

The dif between the Schwantz/Rainey is Rainey crashed like 3 races to go in that season with few points between the two..Rossi was out first of the season.. Plus KS took it to WR many times on the crappiest bike on the grid at that.. so not the same..

Like it or not Povol unless JL beats a HEALTHY Rossi in head to head battles he'll just be another Criville

im not talking about what the fans say or think. Im talking about how the riders feel about their championship. In 06 Nicky loved being champ but of course he felt it tarnished through the fact he only won 2 races that season, one being his home gp and the other being a tad lucky as he and Colin were destined for hay bales after the last turn
<
. Stoners tarnish was the other teams were so far behind in the new 800 season and everyone was pointing that out. Drill nailed it when he talks about how Schwantz felt by winning after Rainey was eliminated through injury being the points leader at the time. Im talking about how the riders feel about their own achievements , To win against the best possible competition is the best win of all in the minds of a competitive person. Jorge says he is thinking of the championship and will ride accordingly. Yes im sure he feels that way in the cool atmosphere of an interview. On track its a different matter !!

I hope Rossi takes the win.....but if Lorenzo podiums all 18 rounds and has around 10 wins and the rest 2nd place finishes, his "asterisk" will be very small.

Rossi came close to this feat in 2002 with 11 wins and four 2nds.....and one retire. Rossi has only had a complete season of podiums once (2003)....not knocking him, but showing how hard that is to do over a race season.

I think Schwantz took Rainey's crash the hardest (even Rainey claimed to be and seemed at peace with what had happened that day) knowing that the title would not mean as much to him without Wayne racing him to the end. You could see it in Schwantz's face that racing died the day Wanye crashed out.....and he was a mess through 1994 and in 95 when he quit. Lorenzo has not really acknowledged Rossi's injury other than a little sign at the Mugello race.....so the fans will be harder on Lorenzo for this. The Lorenzo haters have all the ammo you could want.....He rides a winning bike Rossi developed, he is only winning because Rossi got hurt/missed 4 races/will have to ride through pain for the rest of the season, and the other aliens are weak this year (Stoner has front end problems keeping him from running away from the field, Pedrosa can't dog fight for the win so Lorenzo keeps him from getting the hole shot ).

here is a cool clip from old of Rainey and Schwantz

Very hard to generalize so much this early, A LOT can still happen and Jorge has been beaten fair and square a few times already this year.......I'm eternally optimistic that we are still to see some surprises this year

I am sorry roger, I don't go for the asterix theory in any form, except perhaps for a rider injured in an accident caused by another, even though asterix theory makes doohan possibly an eight times world champion. Rainey himself recently has said there is no asterix on schwantz's world championship, saying you have to be there to win.

I have always thought schwantz's concern in 2003 and subsequently was that rainey had been made paraplegic by the sport they both loved rather than anything as petty as how it reflected on his world championship. It certainly upset me and I didn't know the man personally.
