<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE <div class='quotemain'>Kenny Roberts believes that the MotoGP world championship will see a further capacity reduction in the future, with four-stroke 700s or 600s the most likely step.

On the eve of the new 800cc era that gets underway in Qatar next week, the American legend told MCN: “If power to weight stays the same then 800s will be OK but if you back off the weight then down the road you’ll probably be looking at around 700 or 600cc. They’d still go round the racetrack faster depending on the power to weight. If you can back off the weight then that makes a big difference.”

Roberts added that he hasn’t been surprised by the blistering early pace set by the new generation 800cc machines, which have already broken 990cc lap records at most tracks in winter testing.

The triple world champion told us: “Every year is going to get faster. The electronics are going to get better, rider aids are going to get better so we haven’t even scratched the surface on that in my opinion. The 800s don’t have the tremendous torque and last year we were taking power out of it rather than putting it in. In that
respect it was a good idea to go to 800s because you won’t have to spend so much time taking horsepower out, although you will eventually to go round the track faster.”

whatever next ?

i think he is bang on,i recon the 800s will only race for a few years before a futher cc reduction, after all it is prototype racing.
wonder if they will ever get 500 or 600cc 4 strokes that are as fast and powerful as the old 2 strokes.

well it'll be a few years before they really even consider this. the 990s ran for 5 seasons so i'd expect the 800s to go for a couple more years than this. maybe 2012 or 2013 before another change.

I hope so. Consistency is good for the sport. The 990's were just getting settled, and the racing improved every year as a result.

I thought this a very interesting quote....uhm

Yea, what would that World Champion know?

I don't think we need any 500cc or 600cc regulation changes just yet, perhaps in a good few years then it's something worth thinking about but we've only just started to settle for 800cc racing so don't expect too many changes within the next few years. I agree that the bikes are developing more and more each year and the mechanics are becoming more skillfull too.

yeah... were'nt we disscussing this on another thread somewhere?

John Surtees said the same thing last year, its interesting but I hope it will speed the bikes up rather than slowing them down.

For all that dont believe Pedrosa's weight gives hin an advantage, read the quote from KRJR.

Why even bother with displacement regulations. Let the manufacturers run whatever they like and have the best bike/rider/tire combination win..

That could get a bit crazy, and rather one-sided I would think.
And just one little thing that's bugging me - this is KR saying this about the displacement change, as in King Kenny, not KRJR, as in KR II.
