Is Rossi a shoo-in. If history repeats itself it seems like he's in the perfect position, or more appropriately, Burgess is in the right position.

5 times with Doohan, 2 off years, then 5 times with Rossi, 2 off years, then..........

The Rossi/Burgess combo was eclipsed by a Repsol in 2006 (just like in 1999) and by a small underdog operation in 2007 (just like in 2000). Both Hayden and Stoner are first timers just like Criville and KRJR. An American has won both times during the two sets of off years.

Obviously, Burgess doesn't have a new young star to make a 5 year run with, but he does have a newly elected Dorna official on board. Is Rossi and his new repertoire of "skills" good enough to stay at the top for another half decade?

You really never can tell with Rossi.

Hey you may be onto something there ...... only I'm wondering if Lorenzo is his new star??

Fat chance! Jerry Burgess won't work with Lorenzo ... he doesn't have the talent to deliver five championships! That said, Jerry Burgess won't be around the paddock for another five years!

He won back to back 250 championships... what makes you think he can't deliver and defend?

Not now but a few years down the line i think hes gonna be hard to beat.

MotoGP is totally different to the 250 class. Unless he can significantly improve his riding in the wet, ie improve about 1000%, it is my opinion that he will never put himself in the position to win a MotoGP championship. It is highly probable that there will be 3 or 4 wet races next year ... based on what I've seen him do in the wet, he is likely to pick up zero points (even with only 18 riders on the grid in 2008). You can't give away 75 or 100 points to that field and expect to come out on top!

I think he had a relatively easy run in the 250 class in his championship years ... the depth of field in 06 and 07 (both riders and bikes) was not a scratch on what it had been in the previous 10 years!

Back on topic ... Rossi is one of five riders I think can win the championship next year! The biggest factor will be what Yamaha give him over the full course of the year. He has the talent and team to win, but I'm not sure about the 800cc he will throw his legs over!

Pedrosa wasn't any better in the wet, his first year he lost some points but this season he was able to ride in the wet better.

He can only beat whats there, Dovi is a great rider and gave him a bit of a push on the Honda but he won the championships convincingly. Its a good pedigree to have 250 championships moving up to the top class... you know the tracks really well.

Burgess is not the important one now, hes made a nice bike that smart japanese bloke the head of yamaha could be important to how well this season goes for Rossi.

Imo, Rossi is more realistic than his hardcore fans. He wants to win just one more title, but he wants it very badly. It would not be a small achievement!

If he does that, racing in yet another formula after 125, 250, 500 and 990, against the fiercest competition ever and with different tyres, after a gap of two years without title, his record will become very hard to beat for the foreseeable time.

Good point winning on 5 different types of GP machines would be a ridiculous achievement.

wont ever win on the 800, not coz hes no good, but just too much competition for him now.

hes been very lucky to have come in after doohan.

Doohan recommended Rossi to Honda, and handed down his Burgess team to him... He was seeing him as his heir. Rightly so...

I think WE have all been very lucky to have a Rossi after a Doohan... Imagine life after Doohan if Rossi had not been there

I see Lorenzo as the next big thing. He can put together a run of championships provided he can get an edge on Pedrosa. Its over for Rossi, he can't compete with the new breed of champion riders. Stoner will be competitive but once the field evens out in terms of bike and tyre developments, his advantage will be lost. A big year for Melandri - can he turn from pretender to contender?

yes same here with lorenzo, but saying its over for rossi is ridiculous and im not saying that just because im a fan, ok he didnt do to well this year but alot has to be blamed on yam/mic if i wasnt a rossi fan id still be telling you the same thing.
i think the stones will run well on the yam because they are very durable and should last race distance, like in assen if rossi gets a good bike setup like that for most of the races next year hes going to win and i still cant understand why most people here are scared to even think it may be possible, melandri may have bitten off more than he can chew i think the electronics on the duke and they way its setup plays havok with his riding style same as it did with loris.
im expecting haystack to be much more competive next season and loris too, but hats off to casey for being the only one to tame the beast, he was very lucky to find something that he felt good on and suited his riding style from the start feeling confident helps in a big way.
im so looking forward to next season cos i think its going to be an interesting one.
im not saying rossi will win next season im just saying that he should not be counted out, even tho he didnt win this seson he still managed to finish in the top 3, now if that means hes finished, does that mean every rider other than 1st and 2nd are finished also???

I think Rossi has got another one in him and when he does it he'll be the only one to have 125, 250, 500, 990 and 800 championships.

I think he certainly has at least 1 more championship in him.
Changing tyres to Bridgestone wont do it for him though.
Yamaha need to bridge the straight line power advantage Ducati, Honda and probably Kawasaki have over them. The problem is, if Michelin are the better tyre to have in 2008 then Pedrosa and Hayden will be tough to beat. Then he still has Stoner and maybe Melandri to deal with. If he wins in 2008 then he will have earned it.
