Dan Weldon, Indy Car racer, died today in crash at Las Vegas Speedway. RIP.

Sad day, was watching when it happend. I think the other drivers knew, most were sitting around crying. RIP Dan

Very sad news - my kids this morn were watching whilst getting ready for school - they called me come see this crash Dad - man I said I hope no one is badly injured especially seeing the car in flames near the infield wall still moving along with the fire truck or ambo following it......I changed channel so they wouldn't hear anything. My worst fears at the time were comfirmed driving to work.

RIP Dan Weldon and comiserations to all family members.

I'll admit I was pursuiing a racing career in the US in the Fedex CART series but abandoned the idea when CART merged with IRL and became basically an oval exclusive league with pretty poor regard for both spectator and driver safety. I didn't know Dan personally but raced in series against him for a few years in the Junior karting levels and this news has just left me numb. Its part of racing life, it happens, but Indycar always seems to cause it in such a gruesome way.

RIP

damn...read below..truly sad.

The tragic irony is Wheldon was only racing Sunday because of a promotion. Earlier this year as a way to bring attention to the fledgling series, CEO Randy Bernard put up a $5 million award to any non-series regular who could win the finale. As a non-regular, Wheldon was eligible.

One condition was that he start at the back of the 34-car field, a huge deficit to overcome, but one Wheldon said could be done in the 200-lap race. Just 12 laps in, two cars touched in front of him, setting off a horrific chain reaction of events that Patrick described as straight out of a movie.

Wheldon, having moved up some 10 spots already, couldn’t slow in time. His car launched over the back of one in front of him, turned in midair and slammed into the catch fence. Rescue workers were quick to the scene, but neither they nor doctors at a local hospital could save him.

Jesus H Christ! The crash looks like a scene from a Michael Bay movie.

I wouldn't lay blame at the feet of the series for their promotion. Dan had been itching to drive all year. It was obviously killing him that he didn't have a full-time ride. He loved oval racing. I doubt anyone put a gun to his head and told him to get in the car (it would probably require a gun to get him out of one).

I'm not saying you're apportioning blame here, L8. I just want to say this in case people do. Self-righteous fans on other forums, who probably didn't know Wheldon, have been throwing blame around like crazy.

Shupe...no offence taken, just putting it out there.

I personally agree with Jimmy Johnson, open wheel cars should not be competing at ovals, but that's an old argument that starts many debates.

I agree they don't belong on 1.5 mile banked ovals, particularly with pack racing. However they have done fine on the flat 1-milers, Michigan, and Fontana.

Jimmy's comments sound a little self-serving to me. That's just like some lazy reporter to reach out to a NASCAR guy on what Indycar racers should do.

I can't help but think that $5 million dollar gimmick had something to do with his death. It seems like when the accident occured Dan didn't slow down at all, but was possibly trying to 'steal' some positions, thus causing him to not react in time and jumping over a car. But who knows.
