Laguna is one of, if not the best circuits in Motogp at the moment. I just can't see that layout rivaling it as a spectacle. We'll see I guess, but it better not replace Laguna Seca down the track.
From an overall '<u>event</u>' perspective, Indy will be the better <u>race weekend</u>. The folks at the Speedway know how to throw a big party and put on a worldclass event. The Speedway is much more fan friendly as far as accessability and viewing goes than what Laguna is. Laguna is what, almost 2 hours from a major airport with basically 2 ways in and two ways out (one road from the North, one from the South), while the Speedway is about 15 minutes from a major airport with lots of access all the way around. Laguna is surrounded by rocks, sand, gravel, and sparse grass. Needless to say, The Speedway has much better spectator accomodations. The city itself really rolls out the red carpet on race weekend and has received good reviews from those from Europe that attended the F1 race. The Speedway is within a day to day and a half drive of about 80% of the motorcycle riding population of the USA. That combined with it's proximity to a major airport will provide for a much larger crowd than what Laguna gets. Before MotoGP hit Laguna, the AMA races there were thinly attended when compared to tracks in the middle of the country and in the East like Mid-Ohio, VIR, Brainard, Barber and Road America. Several of the larger AMA races are just a tick below attendence than what the Laguna GP race is anyway. Going on that alone, the attendence figures of the Indy race will dwarf those at Laguna. Also, given that Indy has much more hotels available, there will be nowhere near the price gouging going on that happens at Laguna (I booked a large suite less than 15 minutes from the speedway for $105/night) I spoke with Mitch Boehm from Motorcyclist mag at an AMA event at Mid-Ohio this past summer, and pretty much agreed with everything I stated above. As he put it "it is THE Speedway ya know" So, for an overall "fun weekend", Indy should crush Laguna. If you are speaking purely from a race track perspective, Laguna has the better racing layout for sure, but from an overall event standpoint, The Speedway and the city of Indianapolis are much better equiped for hosting the circus that is MotoGP IMHO.
that being said, If I were riding a motorcycle and had 10 days to blow, the area around Laguna would be better than Indiana strictly from a motorcycle riding standpoint, but probably not from a race viewing/party standpoint. Laguna will be the better TV race because of the track layout. Yes, the state of Indiana does suck, but The Speedway on race weekend is a hell of a party - that's what races are over in this part of the USA - one massive party with a thing called a race interrupting it on Sunday. So if I were the guy on his 10 day holiday, show up in Indy Thursday night, enjoy the party and then head out after the checkered flag on Sunday and go to Vegas or Miami Beach or something.
as an aside, last year I priced out Laguna vs. Jerez. Airfare/hotels and tickets from Cleveland Ohio was cheaper for Jerez than Laguna. Go figure. If my traveling companions would not have bailed on me, I would have been in southern Spain for the dawn of the 800 era.....
