IF YOU WERE MOTO GP WORLD CHAMPION WOULD YOU....

....take the number 1 plate or stick with the number you had always had?

I would stick with the number I had always had, not sure why, I suppose its got something to do with it being your identity and I always think if you take the number 1 plates it makes it look like your not expecting to experience this feeling again so your wanting to take your opportunity.

thoughts?

i think the number on your bike should be relevent to where you finished in the championship, so i would use the #1 plate

I would stick with the number I always had!
I don't really know why but I would find it ridiculous to have to change it back when you're not a world champion anymore.
In my opinion it's a very good question! I've always wondered what other people would do! So I'm curious...

I think it has more to do with marketing. One example is Rossi, he has to keep #46. Miguel DuHamel in AMA is always #17. From a practical standpoint some of the more popular riders canot change numbers. Personally I would want to have the number 1 plate.

where you been bro ? nice to see you back.

it would be a right pain if the rider you supported finished in a different place in the championship every year so you had to but a new t shirt and hat every year.

What number was Joey Dunlop ?
What number was Schwanz ??
What number is Melandri ??

The list goes on and on !

The only person i know who was number 1 was doohan, what was his No before that ?

Answers to the above please

Great minds think alike.

That's the first thing I thought of. I'd put on some nice Dan Post python boots, a Stetson, and a big belt buckle with a diamond plated #1 and go round up some scrumptious umbrella tat. I might even wear my Kakadu and sport some spurs with my bobs at track height so they can hear me coming.

You think I'm kidding.

Edit: Here's a visual with an improved buckle.

Poor Rossi. His herd would be getting thin.

I would take the #1 plate.....not sure why. But I also understand the whole "gotta keep the same number for the fans" line of thought as well.

It is hard,a little bit ,give a clear answer
As a marketing issue i would use number one
<

however "my fans" would they agree or not

i think i would go for something more.... unusal. i'd go with the #0 or 00
<

Win the championship, you've earned the #1 plate

Run the #1 plate for sure.......

I would definately take the #1 plate. Why, because you are the only person that can have it and everyone else would like to have your choice.
<

I'd like to keep my own number, for sentimental reasons and to keep my fans happy, but i'd probably take the no.1 plate beings i've earnt it and i may never get a chance to run with it again. i'd probably do like nicky did and troy bayliss and jt in wsb did and have my own number imposed in the no.1 somewhere.

mylexicon how i hope you never become worldchamp !!
Will you turn up to race meeting on horseback ?

Riders should stick with there numbers.

What number was Joey Dunlop ? Mainly 3
What number was Schwanz ?? 34
What number is Melandri ?? 33

doohan, what was his No before that ? I think he took the number of his championship position from the previous year! I know he used number 3 at one point in time! possibly 1991??

Well, that would be unfair. How in God's name are the other riders supposed to get laid if I show up on horseback?

<
Showing up on horseback would be unsportsmanlike. I can only handle a few women at a time, what's the point in winning them all over if I can't enjoy them?

Interestingly enough, in 1989 (his first year of 500cc GP racing) Mick Doohan used the number 27!

After finishing 9th in that first year, he then used number 9 in 1990...

And finshed 3rd in 1990 which then led onto using number 3 in 1991 & so on...

In those days it was the norm to ussume the number of your finishing position in the previous year's championship.

But of course after 2004 he only needed to use the "one" number

I would respect tradition and run the number 1 plate. There have only been very few champs that I've ever heard of keeping their number. The overwhelming tradition has been for the champ to take on the #1. In a way, I think it pays respect to past champions and puts them in an elite group of those who earned and ran the #1 plate. As far as these ideas about fans having to get another t-shirt, that sounds funny to me. As if all of a sudden having the number one makes your old t-shirt obsolete? Its seems common sense that the rider hailing the #1 was the champ for that year. So I don’t really understand where the confusion would come from on the gear.

I'm not sure if it applies today for the national series, but for the local series, you cannot choose a number under the year-end standings that you earned. For example, if you came 8th overall, you cannot get a number under that, but you have the option to choose say a 13 or another number as long as it’s more than the standings you finished.

I like the way it is now in the sense that the riders for the most part keep their numbers year to year. It makes it easier to recognize the riders and associate a number. But I don't like it when the champion doesn't take the number one plate. I think its a bit arrogant and against the grain of tradition (just my opinion, you may disagree).

I think today, some riders are tempted not to take the number 1 plate for marketing purposes. So it just rubs me wrong, but who knows why they really do it. I suppose if you’re the champ you can do whatever you want.
