At this point I don't think anyone else can do better. The top 3 are now the only aliens. If he finishes in 4th then I think he should stay. I mean, he will stay no matter what.
Cal had the pace and is fearless but is not consistent.

Ben Spies 2011 season was similar to Rossi's one this year... 1 win, 3 podiums, many 4th/5th places, Just sayin', Yet Spies got kicked out (but probably more about 2012)

He's won a race, been on the podium a few times, he's doing much better than Ben Spies did... Plus he's a marketing phenomenon. Why the hell would anyone want to get rid of him...

I don't buy it that Spies got kicked out. I think he had had enough of Yamaha's .... at that point and gave them the middle finger. Most of the problems that season were of no fault of his own. You can say all you want about him crashing in practice, but this sort of stuff happens to all the other riders and only Ben Spies had massive mechanical failures during the races.

Apart from the blown engine, I don't see any of Spies' mechanical disintegrations as Yamaha's fault. Yamaha provides parts; it's up to the team to inspect the bike and request repairs or replacements as needed. If someone had properly inspected Ben's shock mount before the Laguna race, the resultant belly flop would have never occurred. Same thing with the brake and other issues that ruined x number of races. In short, I put the bulk of his 'bad luck' down to Houseworth and his crew. In turn, Ben himself must 'shoulder' some of the blame because it was always within his power to request another crew chief.

Okay obviously it's the team's fault but it's still Yamaha's team....

And the visor, the cracked sub-frame. Neither of these are down to Yamaha.

And the tire ! Don't forget the tire that dislocated like no one ever thought it possibly could..

Just sayin',

The tire chunking was Spies fault. Because he didn't fire his incompetent crew chief who didn't inspect it properly, because he supervised the tech who installed the thing on the bike.

Which does beg the question, why the hell didn't they step in and insist on appointing a temporary new lead mechanic? Someone with more experience could have taught the crew a hell of a lot in only a few races. To avoid excess butt-hurt-squealing, they could have left Housie officially in place and assigned this fixer a title like 'assistant engineer,' or some other corporate BS-speak title. Presumably, Ben vetoed any such notions? Perhaps this issue was at the heart Jarvis' "Mr. Fun" attitude on display over the last half of the season.

Erm because they needed the seat for Flossi?
