Bad idea Hopper

So just as Suzuki establish themselves as probably the third best team on the grid behind Yamaha and Ducati.. He decides to go to a Kawasaki?

I can't see the logic here to be honest...

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE <div class='quotemain'>Hopkins in preliminary Kawasaki talks

By Toby Moody Tuesday, May 22nd 2007, 11:20 GMT

John HopkinsJohn Hopkins' management team have had tentative talks with Kawasaki about a 2008 ride, with further talks expected to take place at the Italian Grand Prix, autosport.com can reveal.

On the back of the progress that Kawasaki have made with their new generation 800cc bike, the Japanese manufacturer have had numerous approaches from riders looking at their options for next year.

Sources have indicated, however, that Hopkins' approach has been the most serious. It is understood that senior figures from the Wasserman Media Group that manages his career will be travelling to Mugello next weekend to further discussions.

The American's tie-up with personal energy drink sponsor, Monster, has fuelled speculation about a deal - with its colours being similar to the Kawasaki green. There is already a link with the AMA Super Cross Kawasaki team in the United States.

A Kawasaki source said, "Some top five finishers from races in the last year have come to us, impressed with what they have seen the bike do out on the track.

"We know the bike has improved and we also know that the riders have a lot more to get out of the bike."

Loris Capirossi has also been linked with a switch to Kawasaki. The Italian was close to a deal with the team for the 2003 season before opting for Ducati's first season in MotoGP.

"Anyone who didn't consider Capirossi would be unwise, while to consider a rider just because of a sponsor would also be unwise," added the Kawasaki source.

Kawasaki's hopes of attracting a big name for 2008 have been boosted by the progress that they have made this season.

It has not gone unnoticed by a number of riders that the Kawasaki have eeked out an extra 10bhp from their engine since the start of the season - with more expected to come.

Interesting. Hopkins management will definitely use it as leverage when negotiating with Suzuki. I say John will get a nice pay bump if he stays with the boys in blue

I think he might be just leveraging. But if he isn't, I can't blame him. But I wouldn't say its a good time right now, Suzuki is looking competitive. But ...., you gotta admit, he languished for too long with this ...... project. I think Kawasaki sucks ten times more than Suzuki. I was hoping for another American to take this miserable Suzuki brand to another championship, but damn its been frustrating for me, I can only imagine its been mind-boggling for him. What ever happens, I hope him the best.

...and everyone else knows he's laying out his stall. Maybe he knows something we don't. He's waving his flag anyway, who knows who might phone? I think he has his eye on Edward's ride.

It certainly appears as though Kawasaki have advanced leaps and bounds this season. I say appears because it's very tough to gauge how a factory is doing without a consistent podium challenger.

So for Hopkins to bide his time at Suzuki for years and pass on offers from Ducati and finally realize the potential of the Suzuki factory this season only to jump ship to a relative unknown who has had little success? Doesn't make sense to me unless he is using it for leverage to get more money at Suzuki or to shop his name around the paddock in hopes he will attract the bigger teams as Skid has suggested.

If he ultimately goes to Kawasaki and it becomes Monster Kawasaki as has happened with all the American Kawasaki race teams, I will say he is in this thing for the money.

Melandri will take that!

Dont go to Kawasaki Hopper, Suzuki are better!

I saw this story and just had to say "Whaa??!". If he is serious, I just can't see the logic behind it. To put up with a ...... team for a long time only to have them come good and be challenging for podiums over Hondas, then leave for a lesser team? No way. I agree with Austin, if he is doing it just for the Monster $$ then thats all he is about and I will lose a good bit of respect for him.

If he is shopping his name around like you guys say, isn't it a bit early for that? People don't usually start swapping seats this early, do they?

Wild Theory Warning

Maybe Suzuki has worked out some kinda crazy deal to snag Ben Spies out of his contract with the Yosh team and given John the boot!

Yep, and it would also appear that he didn't want to have the pressure that comes with a competitive ride. Just cruise around, bang some hot beaver, say you're better than Nicky but don't have a good bike, and rake in the $$$$$$$$$$.

I hope this doesn't happen; I'm eager to see Hopper at the front.

Hopper will be at the front wherever he goes. I'm sure he'll choose whats best for getting the highest results... If he chooses Kawasaki it's not because of sponsorship or money because John is simply not like that. I agree it would be backwards to leave Suzuki so soon. And I doubt he'd want to ride any michelin-shod ride....

Don't think this is the case... Hopper has always been one of the hardest charging riders out there. Always rides the wheels of his bike to make up for it's deficit. Don't think he's interested in just cruising around. Give him some respect!

Well i guess he wants to know where he will be next year now !! insted of wating for Jorge Lorenzo to knock him out of the team !!
