Hoffman to challenge sacking

From a press release issued by Alex Hofmann:

"According to a recent press release issued by my team, my contract as a rider for Team Pramac D’Antin was terminated on the evening after the Portuguese Grand Prix (September 16th, 2007), with immediate effect.

I consider the termination of my contract unjustified, and I will fight this decision with all legal resources at my disposal.

The written dismissal was not based on the race day events, but on my allegedly poor performance throughout the season.

This performance was not as poor as to justify my dismissal. After all, I held eleventh position in the MotoGP World Championship rankings, only nine points behind my team-mate Alex Barros, before I was forced to take time out from racing due to an injury caused by another rider.

My conduct during the race at Estoril also does not justify a dismissal. Because it was always my intention to devote all my efforts in the race to my team, I entered the race with an injury to my hand that had not properly healed. In the warm-up lap, I realised that there was a clutch problem on my number one bike. After changing to the spare bike that was not equipped with the race tyres I had chosen, I then faced a considerable time handicap through having to start from pit lane. Although the field had opened a gap of 11 second in the opening lap of the race, I made every effort to catch up. I was however forced to accept the unfortunate reality that it would be impossible to achieve this goal onboard the spare bike I was riding. Indeed my only hope of improving my position was that if other riders crashed or suffered technical difficulties.

Bearing in mind these circumstances, I felt I could not take any more risks that might endanger the healing process of my injured hand. I therefore decided to retire from the race.

Disappointed and frustrated as I was at the time, I was not really able to properly express my feelings about what had happened immediately after the conclusion of the Portuguese Grand Prix. Considering that I have always made a point of proving my unconditional dedication to Team Pramac d’Antin during 2006 and 2007, I feel that it would have been sufficient to give me a warning.

I would have accepted this course of action, but I will certainly not accept a dismissal without notice. My goal is to conclude the season for my team, and to start again for Team Pramac D’Antin as of the Australian Grand Prix on Phillip Island, October 12th thru 14th, 2007.

I have forwarded this request in writing to my Italian and Dutch employers. I have called upon them to reinstate me as a MotoGP rider in the team, and to duly fulfil the conditions of the existing contracts."

What are his chances? Not good..

Hofmann isn't doing himself any favours pulling this ..... If anyone was high, drunk and stupid enough to be contemplating giving him a ride anywhere next year they'll think twice if this his how he reacts to being fired.

What I don't get is he rides a total of 103 laps before the race started shouldn't this have given him a good indication as to whether his hand could hold up for 28 laps.

"Indeed my only hope of improving my position was that if other riders crashed or suffered technical difficulties."

You dummy, there were 4 other dnf's, if you'd kept riding you would have picked up a point and your team wouldn't have thought you were totally worthless as a rider. As it happens you couldn't be bothered riding for last so your team can't be bothered with you.

By the way comparing yourself to your team mate isn't doing you any favours, he's ordinary and without a ride as well.

sounds like he is changing his story now, if he carry's on like this he will be lucky to remain a professionals rider.
hoffman, you had it, you blew it, move on !

Hoffman doesn't realise that it's not about the position he is on track - it's about the fleeting opportunities his sponsors have for TV exposure by him being on track, even if dead last. So despite everything, he should have continued.

The Hoff is a champ....and I don’t want Anyone to Forget this!!!...the Hoff was the only privateer to give it to the factory boys!!! So please Mr Hoffman “Fight for it 24/7 and till death do you Part!!!”....... yours at D’Antin!!!
You’re a bunch of losers that really “Don’t Appreciate Quality in a Rides”!!!...and that is Ducati or NOT!!!...

....Give what to the factory boys? A good laugh? A round of drinks? I know selective ignoring seems to be inbuilt into your character, but how was he the privateer who gave it to the factory boys when Barros was ahead of him?

you are taking the piss now mate, as far as i can see the hoff did bugger all,.
tell us all how he " give it to the factory boys", im intrigued.

I think it’s as simple as the guy is out of a job and realizes he has very few opportunities in his chosen profession. So he is trying to get back what he flushed down the toilet in a moment of frustration. As humans, we all have had our bad moments, unfortunately, sometime the consequences of our misbehavior have lasting repercussions. He is now feeling the effects of what he did and is trying to salvage his career. Unfortunately for him, he is not good enough to have such an emotional blow out as some of the other primo Dona athletes and still have a job. I don’t think he will get his job back. Its like trying to unring a bell. He let his emotions get to him and now he is paying the price.

I say bad move Alex. He made a complete balls of himself by retiring from a race citing a lack of interest as his reason, what was he thinking? D'Antin was hugely offended and rightly so. I agree with him sacking Hoff, what would any of you do if you poured your heart and soul into something for someone to let you down when it counted and explained it was beacause they couldn't be arsed. That's not what these guys get paid for. To then instigate legal proceedings against the team that has sacked him for plainly not doing his job makes him look like a real ........ It would have been a better PR move at this stage to apologise and make up some excuse. Whose going to hire him now?

Call me cynical but i just think the gods are aginst Chas getting a ride ( or any decent British rider for that matter ) in motogp. First chance he gets some sort of infection and now this ... bet Hoff is back by Philip Island and Chas can say goodbye to his chances to impress ..

I would think the same thing but he has already been linked to BMW's WSB effort. I wonder, if there is a deal with BMW and it was in place before all this happened, maybe they have expressed concern over his actions. Might be an attempt to show his new bosses he does care.

But BMW wont be competing till 2009.. So the Hoff has nothing to do next year, he has to be remembered in some form.. Why not be a whinging sook who cant take a hint?

If it is true that BMW are competing in 09 then Alex will have all of next year to test with them!
Good luck to him..................

BMW may run the new bike in Superstock in ` 08.I say get Alex on it now and thru `08 and make him at one with the Beemer, guy deserves another stab at a season but it has to be his last if he doesn`t deliver.

King James "the Yorkshireman", as they call him, is coming to the GP's next year.

I agree totally! The Hoff is a legend, who will never die. He won't crash and burn - no matter what you people think. If he has to fight until he fades away, thats fine, but for true racers, crashing and burning isnt an option. It shows he has TRUE dedication to motorbike racing if he is fighting for his place back.
