In before the usual crowd of dirt-bike haters....

Seriously though why do these guys find it necessary to do jumps and ...., they can do all their training on a flat track and have a much lower chance of breaking every bone in their body...

Actually i read it wrong, it was a super moto bike he was training on

Plenty of riders have succesful careers without ever throwing a leg over a CRF250 so it's obviously not a drop dead necessity to do it. The risks outweight the rewards.

More so than that, I have yet to hear any rider say the extensive MX riding they did in the off-season helped them win a MotoGP race.

It does help tremendously  When you ride dirt bikes or Super Moto bikes, you are constantly ' out of shape" unlike when you are riding a GP bike that spends 99% of its time on a rail. By training with a dirt bike or Smoto, you keep muscle memory and mental reaction to being out of shape when that 1 % happens. Then there is the risk versus reward thing. Most seem to think its worth the risk.

I definitely get the benefit of riding (and driving) on loose surfaces. Shoot, I'm saving up to go to rally school just for that reason. But with so many riders getting hurt riding in the dirt (seems there's at least two every year), it has to make you wonder. I think dirt riding is a great way to develop riding skills when you're young, but for pro riders it poses potential risks to their careers.

I guess thats why they say bike riders are a different breed. They dont care about consequences. I have had several friends get killed on bikes over the years, and every single time, someone in my family asks me if im ready to give up motorcycles. I just look at them  and quote Hunter S Thompson

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with

the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body,

but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up,

totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”

Well, as a fellow motorcyclist, I can say this: I care about the consequences, but not enough to stop riding. Motorcycling is easily one of the most dangerous things you can do, but there simply is nothing else in the world like being on two wheels. That's probably why we're so addicted to MotoGP in the first place.

I have nothing against Herrin, but I think he is singlehandedly destroying the chances of an American ever again making the jump from the US domestic series to GPs. This is not a condemnation of him so much as AMA/DMG and their stupid production-based class structure.

Sorry to rant in my first post here, but I really needed to express that!

If thats your idea of a rant, you are one mellow dude. Or as Cousin Vinny said, "ive seen your parents argue, they are amateurs".

One Marc Marquez may disagree with you...

6 races in and JH has 3 x DNF, 2 x DNS and a 22nd place finish.

In summary: room for improvement.

When I heard Josh was going to be in Moto2 I was pumped to watch some Moto2. The day of the races I'm anticipating some fun racing with Josh all of a sudden he crashes out. I hope he can settle down and recoup from his shoulder injury and improve. I'm mean he can't do much worse than what he is doing now. Let's go Josh.
