Ever-popular Isle of Man TT star Guy Martin is about to become a prime time feature on BBC1 television!

With just weeks to go before the start of the 2011 Isle of Man TT fuelled by Monster Energy – which gets under way on May 30 – one of the event’s best-known names is to be presented to a whole new audience.

Already famous among TT fans for his fast-talking Lincolnshire brogue, passion for tinkering with anything mechanical and dedication to racing, as well as a love of a good brew, Guy’s unique personality is set to be unleashed on primetime BBC TV.

It has been known for several months that the Kirmington ace was working on a series with North One Television – which produces coverage of the TT.

It has been confirmed the first programme in the series will be broadcast on BBC1 at 7.30pm on March 2.

The Boat That Guy Built is a six-part series which follows Guy and his best mate Mark ‘Mave’ Davies as they attempt to fit out a narrow boat using the best British innovations from the Industrial Revolution.

Each half-hour episode will see the 29-year-old trying to complete a mission using only his homemade version of historical gadgets, from blast furnaces to steam engines.

Along the way we see how he copes with using only historical methods to carry out every day tasks, from taking a shower to making beans on toast – and, inevitably, brewing up the perfect mug of tea!

Guy is one of the TT’s most popular riders, his easy-going style and passionate determination to win on the Mountain course earning him thousands of fans around the world.

Top bloke. Really looking forward to this one.

We should run a sweepstake on how many times he brews up.

I'm a big fan of Guy, i desperately want to see him get a TT win and generally find some sucess. But at the same time i sometimes cringe about the things i see written about him and the things he does which promote the image and persona he's carved out for himself while actually contradicting it completely. I understand that he has to let some of his ideals slide to some extent, for one i am pleased to see he has signed for Tas and is prepared to be slightly more corporate and professional in the persuit of racing success. But on the other hand it seems he is one of the most promoted riders in Britain relative to his achievements, and he maintains a grass roots image while clearly raking in plenty of money. He gets labelled as being a particularly easy going guy, but his sulk at the TT last year would suggest different, as would a few other of his antics over the years. Things like that leave me thinking that he is not actually all that different from his peers, its more a matter of Guy having a personality that is easy to like. I'm not having a dig, because i think Guy is a brilliant character, an exciting rider and just the kind of person the sport needs in the spotlight. He is an eccentric. I think i'll probably take a look at his show too.

I give it a half season before he does something to self-destruct. I really like the guy, but the likelihood that he can keep a business deal together is seemingly nil.
