WSBK » Laconi 'serious but stable', surgery postponed
The planned operation to help ease Regis Laconi's condition following his practice crash at Kyalami on Friday has been delayed for the time being on the advice of a neurological expert.

The French rider crashed heavily at the start of free practice for the South African round of the World Superbike Championship, and required immediate attention at the side of the circuit before being airlifted to Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg. Initial diagnosis pointed to spinal fractures, but it wasn't until Laconi was safely installed in hospital that a full evaluation of his injuries could be carried out.

Investigations on Friday evening confirmed that the DFX Corse rider had indeed suffered back injuries, with the cervical vertebrae C3 and C5 both broken, along with severe concussion and a lung contusion, but a CT scan proved to be negative in the search for nerve damage.

While the latter news is encouraging, Laconi remains in an induced coma, although his condition has been upgraded to 'stable'. The operation initially planned to install plates to stabilise the Frenchman's spinal injuries, however, has been delayed for at least 48 hours on the advice of South African neurosurgeon Dr Maurizio Zorzi, who was flown in from Pretoria to offer his opinion on the extent of the veteran's injuries.

The official WSBK website claims that, provided there are no further complications, it could still be as long as three weeks before an accurate prognosis of Laconi's condition is possible, during which time he will remain immobilised.

Not the religeous type but my thoughts go out to you brother.
Je te/vous souhaite un bon rétablissement.

Add to that his win in the wet at Valencia on the WCM Red Bull YZR500, and the way he valiantly fought to stay on the 999 over Lukey Heights......

If he'd saved that it would have been almost as good as the one Mamola saved years ago.

They've brought him out of the coma now too.

Regis Laconi's condition is reported to be improving slowly. The French rider, who crashed on his out lap in the opening free practice session of Friday morning in a fast left-hand corner, is currently hospitalized in the intensive care unit of Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg. He was successfully brought out of a medically-induced coma and his upper and lower limbs immediately showed signs of autonomous movement. As a result it has been decided to carry out the operation that involves the application of a plate to stabilize the two fractured vertebrae. The operation will be carried out on Tuesday 19th May, and Regis will have to stay a minimum of two weeks in the same hospital. He should, at the end of the month, be in a condition to be transferred to Paris, where he will complete his convalescence. The other neurological problems resulting from the crash are also showing positive results.

I wouldn't go so far as calling it "great news" but good news nonetheless. Its gonna be a long recovery, I hope he makes it fully back to normal function. I'm not gonna say he'll be back racing but then again look at the guy who just won the 250s.
