Gardner's Thoughts on the 2009 WSBKs

Wayne Gardner tested each entrant in WSBK in 2009 for GPone.com and you can check out the video below. To sum up...

The RSV4 was his overall favorite because it was the best handling bike and although it wasn't the fastest, had great power.

He thought that the S1000R was just a touch off the handling of the Aprilia but seemed to rank it second.

With respect to Ducati, Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki, he never really quite puts them in order.

He said he loved the torque of the 1098R around Portimao but never elaborated further on the Ducati.

He thought the CBR1000RR was the best inline four cylinder and was very fast.

He said that the R1 has probably the strongest engine but it was a nightmare to turn. He also said that Ben Spies won the title on "probably not the best bike."

He thought the ZX-10R was a pleasant surprise but is too restricted by too heavy traction control.

He thought that the GSXR-1000 had a very strong motor but was too bulky handling and is a step behind in a shift in chassis development moving towards lighter, more precise, grand prix style chassis.

Intersting since the Aprilia was considerd the fastest in a straight line all year. Yamaha did close the gap towards the end of the year though in flat out speed.Im sure that makes Biaggi's ....... pucker up when a legend says you got owned by a Rookie on a bike that he feels might just be the worst or second to worst on the grid. He seemed rather amazed that someone could ride the Yamaha to a title. Thanks for the vids, anything to keep the jones away.

I'm surprised he made it 12 whole minutes without insulting someone. Well, nobody but Fabrizio. Nobody cares if he gets insulted.

Good review. I'm surprised he rated Suzuki as one of the worst bikes on the grid. What does that say about Neukirchner or the guys who ride at Kawasaki?

They have this article on Motomatters.com as well. If you read the comments you will see that many people consider his remarks to be controversial.

Peronally, I was surprised to hear Gardner slagging Hayden at Valencia on Eurosport last year (Hayden's farewell party). Not that Gardner's remarks were unjustified, but they were harsh and Valencia was Hayden's last go round for Honda so it was supposed to be a time of reflection and celebration. Gardner apparently took his time behind the Eurosport microphone as an opportunity to slag off another 1-time world champion for a list of failures and under achievements.

It was in bad taste given the occasion. Furthermore, both Gardner and Hayden have achieved the same number of titles for Honda.

I had blocked this from my memory.
