I know it's 3 years away but I've been told to start preparing, so I know what I want and then theirs no fannying about when the time comes, I really like the look of the Honda CBR125, and since that laws coming in where from 17 you've got to go 125, 250 etc.. I was looking for a decent 125

however I keep getting told that the CBR is 4 stroke so it'll be slow which tbh i don't really want so a 2 stroke seems to be my best bet, any ideas on what i should get and what are the prices (new and second hand)

thanks

If you are getting a 2 stroke 125cc bike then its s imple choice between Honda and Aprilia depending on how sensible you want to be, there are no other options. The CBR is not a sports bike and is slow.

I would recommend riding a moped when you are 16 also, i think it odes a lot of good.

Yeah I'm currently debating whether to get a moped or a 50cc bike

Definately not a scooter though, they fall apart before the years through

If you even CONSIDER a stinkwheel, noticably the RS125 Aprilia, you must get BEST oil possible, you can't get cheap oil or it'll break on you.

don't do it, the performance is inferior, the parts will be much harder to find and the build quality will be very similar.

I've got a family member who can get me parts for motorbikes or anything to related to them (leathers etc.) for the price the company pays for them, so I can still get them very cheap, plus the piston rings go frequently on the aprilias i've heard

im a bit out of touch with the smaller bikes but i would not have thought there was a lot of difference in performance with the 4 strokes and 2 strokes as i think they will be bhp restricted anyway.
as other members have said i also think a 50 cc is best for a first bike if you have little or no experience and will probably feel quite fast to start with, if your used to 15-20 mph on a push bike then 30 will feel fast.

Cagiva Mito?
I'm not sure if you'll still be able to buy new 2 strokes in 3 years anyway.

The mito has performance and build quality worse than the Aprilia with parts harder to find, don't even bother looking at them.

You have to ask what you are gonna use it for though. If it will be a learner bike then you may as well get a 4 stroke because of the power restrictions, but if you will pass your test straight away don't even bother with a 125 and get straight onto a real bike (33hp restriction) from your moped. If you really want a 125cc sports bike then you must accept that they are a risk to buy, but if you get a decent one and treat it well it should take you through a year easily without trouble, how many miles do you really think you will cover.

I think I'd cover about 1000 miles in a year, I'd be out on it all the time aswell as the boundary 500.

however I don't want to spend alot of money buying the bike, as i would only keep it for a year, when your saying go from a moped to a real bike, theres a law coming in wher I'll have to move up the cc's going from 125's to 250's and on and on.

I seem to have fallen in love with the Cagiva Mito's and am considering it for my first bike

If you love it, then you ove it and i can't change that. But i wouldn't expect the rings to last any longer on it than the RS, and i have never heard of anyone in the know saying the Cagiva is anything but an inferior bike.

and what a sweet looking bike they are ( ducati 916 lookalike )
down worry about the rings to much, there piece of piss to replace.

My Aprilia RS125 should arrive on friday, i have chosen that over the CBR and the Cagiva Mito. I'll let you know how it is as soon as i get my hands on it. I chose it because everyone recommended it, on the forums and also people here. The fact that Aprilia was in the 125 world championship i must say gave me a certain confidence.

Jamie, I have to say that IMO I wouldnt bother with a 50 for the road. They are dog slow, and the way the traffic is today, I'd rather walk.

I had my eyes opened last summer when I saw a young guy on a Derbi Senda that was running a bit rough getting bullied by traffic in Perth. I ended up filtering up next to him and placing myself and my Tenere between him and the arseholes who were pushing him in the gutter. Didnt make me very popular, but, hey, the guy was roughly the same age as my oldest son, and it really pissed me off the way folks were pushing past him.

Any 50 with gears is going to be dog slow, I remember a mate with an AR50 (anyone remember them?) getting beaten away from a set of lights by a Honda Express. With a shopping basket on the front. I'd wait until I was 17 and get on the road then. Getting a dirt bike until then will get your riding skills up so that they are second nature on the road.

For a 125, what about a DT or something similar? they go pretty well, and a trail bike will give you more presence on the road than a mini race rep. Better vision in traffic too, and if you do fall off, theres less to damage on a traillie. Keep it for year or so and then get something bigger.

Just my thoughts Jamie, look at all your options, you can get your Rossi/Stoner whoever rep when you get your 600!
