I used to ride a Suzuki TS 125 ER, really old now, but on/off road great fun.

If its a sportsbike your after, check out...

Aprilia RS125

Honda CBR125

I find it very hard to decide which is a better looking bike the Aprilia RS or the Caviga, which is like a really small Ducati

Caviga Mito 125

Have a look at Auto Trader even the breakers section, can pick up a good bargin there from time to time,

Best of luck and as Curve said wear gear!!!

Cheers for the advice guys , Id be happy with any of the bikes recommended ( even curves recomendation

) and ill be gearing up with a full set of leathers, safetys number 1. Ive seen some pretty nasty accidents through family and friends because of bikes and as much as they urge me not to go down the motorbike road, theres a fast growing passion that i cant turn away

I reckon the NSR is tickling my fancies the most at the moment, ill have to shop around see what i can find.... by the way, roger .. that bike looks awful lol

Rog we don't want him to look like a pansey and get his ... beat up by his buddies.

Aprilia RS50. Considered a moped, so insurance is alot less.

Just get a normal bike for a grand and have it restricted to 33bhp...so when you do turn 21 and can ride it unrestricted then you will have the full power version of a real bike...and you can look like you are riding a full version of a bike until you are 21 and not a kiddy 125 NSR

how much would you be looking at to have a bike restricted ?? and then to have it reverted back a year later ?... Its an idea, but it might be worth me while getting a scrapper 125, doing her up have me year on her and then flog her for a couple of quid profit.

sounds like a good idea right up until the time it comes to sell it on. then you realise its still just a 125.
put another way...

"you can polish a turd until it glistens in the sunlight, BUT its still a piece of ...."

IMO, get a scrapper, run it whilst doing as little to it as possible and then sell it on at the end of the year. hopefully you can get someone desperate enough to give you good money for it, but dont count on it. biking costs £'s, no matter what your mates ex-room mates sisters cousins ex-dog walker may say.

as for sports type 125s, remember that running costs will be higher. nsrs and mitos have fairings which do break. given that you will be learning, the chances of going down are high and an nsr fairing isnt much cheaper than say an R6 fairing even if its only a 125.

my £0.02

Man, I really wish we had that (bhp is it) restriction over here.
I certainly would have been a better rider on a smaller bike quicker than I got there on that beast I first had

You're not restricted to a 125cc if you take your full test- you'd be restricted to 33 bhp, makes more sense.

like the bike above. I've been thinking about turning one of my crf'450r's into supermoto bike

Have you budgeted for insurance mate?

An RS125 is all very nice and would look & perform good (till you pop a ring or rod!) - but these are very nickable and the insurance would be sky high on a first bike.

Suggest getting a semi-banger, so you cant tinker with it - learn to maintain it yourself without worrying about expensive parts. Also if you drop it you wont mind so much, rather than having all fancy plastics to replace.

125 performace bikes can be fickle and prone to engine problems if they are not looked after. A mate of mine had an rs and his engine seized twice.

Rank these in order, give us a better idea of what you want;

Price
Street Cred
Performance
Cheap to run
On/off road
Speed
Acceleration
Brand/make
Communting
Sunday Runs
All rounder
Droppable
Fixable DIY

Your deffo going to have alot of fun. MAster the 125, then move up the ranks - just dont go direct access and jump on a 600 with no prior experiance!
