Former F1 driver Cristiano da Matta is in intensive care in a hospital in Neenah, Wisconsin, after his Champ Car collided with a deer(???

???) during a test session at Road America on Thursday. Da Matta was unconscious when he was airlifted to hospital after the crash and underwent surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain.

The 32-year-old former Champ Car champion started the season with Dale Coyne Racing but recently moved to the Rusport team, as team mate to another former F1 man Justin Wilson.

He drove for Toyota didn't he in F1??

What a freaky accident, hope he has a speedy recovery.

A deer? I wouldn't think that would hurt THAT much! Blimey I hope he recovers quickly though!

Alex said that it wouldn't hurt too bad, well think, daMatta depending on were he was on the track was going around maybe 125- 150 mph. If people in Michigan die with there compact cars going 50 mph, think of what daMatta endured going almost 3 times as fast.

Don't even think that craziness. The carnage. 99.9% chance of death in a crah like that. don't even think sbout it.

Probably wouldn't have hurt seeing as he was instantly knocked unconscious. But the damage would be huge. In 1977 there was a similar incident at the South African F1GP, but with a fire marshal. The fire extinguisher hit the driver on the head, and from what im told pretty much split his skull. Now imagine what an animal like a deer would do.

As for the fire marshal.. well they couldn't identify the body. They had to call in all the marshals and identify him by process of elimination. It was a real mess

Last I had heard (which was Friday) was that he was upgraded from critical to serious condition. Reports have said that they expect a full recovery and it it possible for him to race by the end of the season.

Former Champ Car World Series Champion Cristiano da Matta may not have fully regained consciousness yet but doctors are impressed with his recovery enough to remove him from the ventilator he has been on for the last two weeks.
The Brazilian driver remains in intensive care in Wisconsin with his family by his side although after his most recent visit to see the 2002 series champ, Champ Car Medical Director Dr. Chris Pinderski was pleased with his progress.

"Cristiano still continues to show daily improvement while in the intensive care unit at Theda Clark Medical Centre," said Pinderski. "He is becoming more alert each day and has been removed from the ventilator that was providing respiratory support since his accident. It is anticipated that he will be transferred from intensive care to a step-down unit in the next 24-48 hours where his recovery will continue."

During last weekend's Grand Prix of Denver, fans of Cristiano and RuSPORT turned out en masse to show their support. The team received a substantial amount of cards, gifts and well wishes throughout the weekend.
We were overwhelmed by the concern and support for Cristiano that we saw in Denver," said RuSPORT president Jeremy Dale. "RuSPORT would like to thank all of the fans for the support they have given to Cristiano and his family though this difficult time. It's very comforting to the team and to the da Matta family to know that the fans care so much about Cristiano."
