The second free practice session in Portugal has concluded, and LCR Honda's young-gun Casey Stoner has finished top of the pile, closely beating out Nick Hayden for the honor of being the quickest man at Estoril.
Stoner's time of 1:38.218 left the Aussie just 0.050 seconds in front of the championship chasing Repsol Honda pilot, Hayden himself a further 0.069 seconds in advance of Kenny Junior on the Team Roberts machine who had a dissapointing morning session.
Tech 3 Yamaha's Carlos Checa is ending his season on a high, his current form nothing short of impressive, the veteran Spaniard closing out the 60-minute run in fourth, placing him in front of six factory riders.
Dani Pedrosa leapt up the order inside the final minute to end up in fifth spot, with Edwards sixth, Gibernau seventh, title contender Rossi eighth, and John Hopkins managed ninth on the Rizla Suzuki.
Garry McCoy on the 800cc X3 Ilmor machine finished in 18th putting a further 24 laps on the data sheets at the 2.598-mile circuit.
Marco Melandri, who recently re-signed with Fausto Gresini's satellite squad, fell on only his second lap, and was taken to the medical center on a stretcher. The extent of the injury to his leg had still to be released by the team.
