Yamaha signs Edwards' successor?
Wednesday, 25th July 2007

The Yamaha Motor Company Ltd has announced one of their riders for the 2008 season.

Previous Page
That rider is 250cc World Champion Jorge Lorenzo who has signed a two-year agreement to ride the YZR-M1 with direct Factory support.

The exact Yamaha team line up is yet to be announced but with Lorenzo signing it does suggest that Colin Edwards could be on his way out. The American has had a torrid season and the results have simply not been there.

Lorenzo, the 20-year-old Spaniard, who won the 250 title in 2006, is currently leading the championship, after winning six out of the first ten races this season is set to make his MotoGP debut in 2008

"Yamaha has been watching Jorge's career with interest for some time and we are delighted that he will be joining our MotoGP line-up from next season,” commented Lin Jarvis, Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing, “We are sure that he will be a valuable asset for the future and we look forward to the commencement of his MotoGP career with Yamaha.”

Damn, i am not optimistic about this move at the moment, i hope Yamaha can give Jorge what he needs to be a contender in a few years time.

be interesting to see how he fairs on a 4 stroke motogp bike, i hope edwards doesnt leave motogp all together and gets another ride cos i like him, he is a good laugh.

Dani Pedrosa was a rubbish wet weather rider too untill a few months ago, and he sits 3rd in the world standings, so don't worry about it. Some guys don't need to be wet riding specialists to get to the front.

well i dont think yam are looking at him be be an immediate championship contender i think there looking at a young talented rider they can mentor for the future, and as tom said ,pedro was ..... in the wet but he aint now, it's called learning and we all do it

I think he will end up being better than Pedrosa, but not as good as Casey and Marco together....

Edwards will go to Tech 3 with Michelins to make them more competative (in theory) along side James Toseland...

first you argue there's nothing wrong with Rossis' Yamaha.....that Stoner is just better, blah, blah, blah.

Now that Lorenzo is coming into the team.. the M-1 is ......he'll never do well on it unless Yamaha get their .... together, just look at Rossi.

The yamaha is ok now, but Jorge wont come to seriously thinking about the title until a few years time, when i expect Rossi to quit. With Rossi (and presumably JB) gone, i expect Yamaha to sink back down to a mid pack bike because quite frankly, i think they owe most of there success to JB.

Of course not it's not like he's dominated the 250s like Stoner or indeed Westy did.........

Lorenzo is a .... hot 250 rider, and I think that makes him a strong candidate for motogp.

I think Lorenzo will probably be in a pretty strong bargaining position to choose a team too, so I think we should credit him with knowing what he is doing. He is after all, better at this game than any of us.

You are having a laugh arent you? You seriously dont believe all the ..... you write do you? Please tell me it's all a joke......

Al, I personally think that there is no contradiction. Rossi went to Yamaha knowing they were a second rate team, its Rossi's technical knowledge and skill that helped get Yamaha to a world title. You see that Edwards never managed to achieve anything more than mid-pack obscurity with that bike. Rossi helped improve that bike immensely, I don't think Lorenzo has the same expertise in bike setup's that Rossi has. I don't think anyone has.

I think Jeremy Burgess should take a lot of credit for Rossi's success, both in his ability to know what changes to the bike, and interpret what Rossi says. Lorenzo will not benefit much from this, and it is something which Edwards does not get either, which must be a factor in the mid-pack obscurity of Edwards as you call it. Plus Rossi is a rider without equal.

I'm calling a three bike Yamaha team next year - you heard it here first!

I think he is a fantastic showman and dominates the 250s...but I have to ask...would he dominate on a Honda or KTM 250?

I don't think he would...the Aprillia is helping him be as dominant as he has helped ALOT...in 2005 he raced with Honda, and got beat pretty decisively by Pedrosa...

I think he will make a great MotoGP rider, but will end up running top 5 for most of his career and finaly win the title once Stoner, Rossi, Pedrosa and CV start to leave the sport.

Lorenzo will be beating CV in two years time.
