Episode 1 - Casey Stoner
Episode 2 - Chaz Davies
Episode 3 - Davide Tardozzi
#22, you are a Brit, yes? I have a question. What is the correct pronunciation of Chaz Davies last name? In the States we would say Day-vees but I always here it pronounced as Day-viss. I guess it’s the latter but it does not make sense.

Great Question, and I have direct experience of it.

In the UK, Davies and Davis are pronounced the same way. The Welsh word for David is Dafydd. In Welsh, the f is pronounced as a v, the y as an I, the dd as th, so Dafydd is pronounced dah-vith, which became Anglicized to Davis.

However, in the US, if you say 'Day-viss', people spell it Davis. So I have to, if I know the person needs to write it down, pronounce it 'Day-vees' over here, and I ....... hate it.

What else should I expect from a country that takes letters out of words (Aluminium) and when they don't just ignore the pronunciation (they say Caramel at Car-mel)...

Rant over.

I don't know him, but there are exceptions to the rule of course

Guess I'm showing my age. The Kinks were a British band who first hit big in the 60s. Quite a few hits over the years. Ray was the singer and main song writer. He and his brother/bandmate Dave were famous for fighting, much like the Gallagher brothers from Oasis, if you're familiar with that band.

Yep I'm aware of Oasis. Maybe his family traditionally said Day-Vees, maybe during his music career he experienced the 'Davis Davies' issue and started pronouncing it that way. 🤷‍♂️

I don't know. I had just gotten used to different British spellings such as tyre, realise, organise, colour, favourite, etc. Then I get hit with this. I hope to visit Britannia before I die and want to get it right.

I don’t much take issue with British pronounciation. After all it’s your language, isn’t it? I do find it annoying when you guys accent the wrong sylAHHble. And what’s with “Going to hospital.” ??? It’s not a town, village, state or region. You wouldn’t say going to chemist, or going to bakery, or going to tube. Is it that you worry that saying “the hospital” will take too much time and you will end up at the back of the line? And why do you mangle a perfectly good Spanish word like jaguar by pronouncing it Jag U Arrr?

I listened to the Stoner episode last night. I was in bed and dozed off for some of it but I thought it was good. Looking forward to the Chaz Day-VISS episode.

The Chaz one was good too. Seems like a very grounded guy who admits he had a lot of luck at times in his career. Was very interesting to hear how he got the 08 Laguna Pramac ride, and how that basically re-energised his career into WSS and then WSBK.

Listened to this last night. Very interesting the way things work out. All in all, sounds like it's good to be Chaz Davies. I thought Chaz's thoughts about Gigi was a good look into Gigi's mind and the way he operates.

I can listen to Stoner talk about racing for hours on end, his honesty is refreshing and has little interest in blowing smoke up his own arse.
