MotoGP changes qualifying format for 2013

By Matt Beer Saturday, October 13th 2012, 21:32 GMT

MotoGP has announced a new split qualifying procedure for 2013, with the fastest riders from practice going into a pole shoot-out.

The existing three 45-minute practice sessions will remain, but the first half hour of qualifying will now be additional practice and will not count for the grid. This period is invariably used for race preparation anyway.

Qualifying itself will become two 15-minute sessions known as 'qualifying practice 1' and 'qualifying practice 2'. QP1 will commence 10 minutes after the end of the new practice four, with a further 10-minute break before QP2.

The 10 fastest riders in the combined times from practices one, two and three will go straight through to QP2.

The rest of the field will have to participate in QP1, from which the fastest two riders will qualify for QP2, with the remainder forming the grid from 13th back.

QP2 will then decide the top 12 grid positions.

The current expectation is that the 2013 entry will contain 12 MotoGP prototypes - four each from Honda, Yamaha and Ducati - with CRT teams comprising the rest of the pack.

The new procedure applies for MotoGP only.

The Grand Prix Commission has also made small adjustments to the testing regulations, with post-season running now counting towards the following calendar year's testing allowance rather than the just-ended season's limits.

In addition, non-factory teams now have the option of using a non-contracted rider for testing.

Sounds incredibly stupid. Just split up qualifying into crt and GP bikes, that way all the GP bikes don't get their laps ruined trying to overtake, and the CRT guys don't get their laps ruined when they have Mark Marquez pushing them out the way next year.

Further Evidence that motogp has gone from sport to Show

and yes i seen this comment elsewhere ,

mega pissed off and Drunk

but i'll have the same thoughts in the morning just like before on this ........ series

Joke.

Pure and simple, yet another joke

When things go rubber side up for a rider in the shenanigan that is Superpole, will that effect their engine/tyre numbers etc.

So QP1 will have all the Moto1 bikes and 2 Factory Moto1 bikes (can't call them prototypes anymore) and then the 2 Moto1 Factory bikes will still end up in the Moto1 Factory QP2 round.

Wonder what this means for TV. Can a telecaster now squeeze in the 15min QP2 + the 45min Race into a 1 hour slot?

.... this, it serves no purpose but to eliminate setup time. Hated these kind of changes in F1 for years, just no need.

Ditto.

I would like if when those geniuses came up with a good idea it would read like this in a headline

" Carmen Explicito tries to lick mower blades"

Advised to turn it off next time. Still confident of "winning looks" however...

I think doing a pure f1 style qualification would be better but I do think a knockout/heat style of qualification is better than the current 1-hour session. After all, they don't line up every sprinter in the olympics at the same time and set them off at once to decide lanes.

Using the heat systems stops slow bikes from blocking the faster ones and provides more entertainment for the fans than the 1 hour session. I think it is win-win.

what i would like to see is a f1 style quali + a Q4 where the top 6 or so each do one lap to gun it out.

still enough setup time but the thrill of who gets the fastest lap without somebody standing in the way and tv direction changing back and forth all the time

I HATE THIS.

We were talking today about how 'super' qualifying sucks in F1.

That is the one thing I really like about MotoGP over SBK - a full qualifying session with all bikes on the track.

.... it: Miss Carlan, take a letter to Ezpeleta... better wear your asbestos earpieces!

That is gold. I'm stealing that.

These changes are supposed to be all for the show, but nothing will stop the likes of Lorenzo sitting around in the pits until there's 3 min to go and ripping out lap records...
