Former 500cc world champion Mick Doohan to meet fans at Silverstone – MotoGP news

Former 500cc world champion Mick Doohan will attend the AirAsia British Grand Prix on June 12, 2011 at the Silverstone circuit.

Organisers of the Silverstone have confirmed Doohan’s presence on Saturday and Sunday at the premier motorcycle-racing event in UK.

The consecutive five-time world champion Doohan also recently made an appearance at the Isle of Mans for the TT races. After the race, fans will be able to meet their Australian idol during the autograph and question & answer session. The Aussie legend will also appear on the entertainment stage on both days of the race weekend.

Doohan is looking forward to be at the British venue for his first visit at the track.

He said, “I plan to hop over to Silverstone for the MotoGP race right after the TT to catch up with some old mates and meet some of the race fans. I’ve never visited the place before and with all the new work they’ve been doing to the track and the pits it all looks pretty cool.”

The former champion was unbeatable in the 500cc class world championship as he dominated the premier class of the 90’s. He won five consecutive world championships starting from 1994 to 1998. The 1997 season was noted as his most successful premier class campaign as he won 12 out of the 15 races in that season.

Current Australian star, Repsol Honda rider Casey Stoner has been compared to the likes Doohan for his driving style. The 2011 MotoGP season is anticipated to be Stoner’s breakthrough season like his 2007 season with Ducati.

Like Doohan, Stoner will also score a title win for the Honda Factory team. Casey Stoner has dominated the season’s start leading practice sessions and scoring two victories- one at the season opener in Qatar and the other at Le Mans.

Stoner is fastest as compared to his two other teammates Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso and is seen to relive the name ‘The Thunder from Down Under,’ given to Mick Doohan during his racing days. Let’s see to what an extent he lives up to it.
