Y'know . . . sure he'd be missed in Moto GP - but hell, if he's feeling his age - it sure would be a more graceful way to leave than to go the Troy Bayliss route. And no I don't mean that as a diss towards Bayliss who has been brilliant. But there is a time when one does get too old for Moto GP and you couldn't fault him for "moving up" to a form of racing where he'd have potentially, years of being competitive. Plus he'd be able to do it having suffered relatively few injuries, something that most former multiple time WGP champs have not been able to do. It's gonna happen sooner or later. Always better to go out at the top of your game.
 
Are you not getting a bit ahead of yourself? He has already said he's too old for F1 and he's on Yamaha for another 2years. If then next 2years are as succesfull as this 1 has been i reckon he'll hang on for another year or 2.
 
I guess Rossi is just getting tired of MotoGp this days. Unlike the 2 stroke and 990 MotoGP era , 800 and electronics lack of overtaking made him bored. IMO, Laguna Seca was the exception. Personally I wish he would not leave MotoGP but finding something else somehere which he misses in MGp, maybe then those fair weather fans would find something else to watch and leave the MGp to the hardcore fans.
 
I'm sure some of the Rossi fans will think I only say this to get Rossi out of the sport, which isn't true. I respect Rossi and enjoy watching him ride. That said, when will our sport ever have the opportunity again to have a motorcycle guy be a competent F1 driver? I would have loved to see Valentino make the switch. But, as was said, Rossi says he is too old to switch. What could have been...
 
I have a strange feeling the 990s will be coming back the same year the 250 class becomes 600s.

I just thought I should mention that now.

As far as Rossi's motivation, it's all related to money. He was once very rich, now he's relatively poor. He's forced to race to keep the lifestyle he has created for himself and his family/friends. When he showed up this season he looked old. I think this tax matter and the lack of competition is wearing him down more than we know.
 
Its just a fun vacation. Its the toys of superstar motorsport racers. Schu did the same thing on a Duc. Its all just for fun. Nothing serious.

Definetely is a fun vacation for Rossi, no doubt about that. But what's the Ferrari guys are thinking? Would be a great thing to have an Italian driver driving a Ferrari F1. Why just the Ferrari sign Alonso or Vettel for 2010 to replace Kimi or Massa?.

With his resume, Rossi can come back to GP or joint WSBK anytime he wants.

LOL at Rossi being poor. The Italian tax rate is less than 100%. He can part with 50 million and be ok.

...that would be the IDEAL way to go out...the way Moto GP is going WSBK is going to be the place to be....talk about the death of MotoGP...imagine if Rossi retires from GP and goes to WSBK....I can bet you most of the "normal" riders would fallow suit...
 
Vale will do whatever he thinks is best when the time comes, and he'll have as more options than you can shake a stick at.

Ive said it before and i'll say it again. rossi will stay aruond till he breaks all recprds he can. with the exception of the one's they don't run anymore. I feel he is ....THIS CLOSE to doing it in just a few or more years. and why not go out the very very top. if he doe;s it I bet his record will stand for at least 50 years till another fenom like him. graces our presence like the riding god messia he is. lets be honest here has anyone else came from 11th to first before he makes it look so easy.

I feel the 600s will be too close to the 800s in speed, and put on a better show.
A move to a bigger capacity for the top class would make sense.

Plus everyone hates the 800s.

This statement is true of any rider.
 
Good point, Tom. The thing is, Valentino and JB seem to almost always find a good solution to the unique problems each track presents. Even if they don't get it perfect, they are almost always very close.

Agreed. Perhaps my gut feeling is based on very little evidence, but I just have a strange feeling about it.

Jean Philipe Weber's interview on the grid at Valencia also gave me some reason to believe something weird was going on. When he was interviewed he vowed Michelin would be back but he said it with the sort of disgust that made me believe he thought Michelin's temporary departure was a pointless formality before an imminent change in the sport.

We shall see

In WSBK when Motogp ceases to exist anymore.

Given expense, popularity, quality of racing and the mother of all financial meltdowns I think all they are doing is swapping deckchairs on the titanic at the moment...
 
Ferrari have given him this F1 test in their 2008 car to say congratulations for winning the MotoGP championship and he is friendly with Ferrari.
