LONDON (Reuters) - The British Formula One Grand Prix faced an uncertain future on Friday after the failure of a bond to cover the cost of re-developing the Donington Park circuit.

"Donington Ventures Leisure Limited can confirm that a bond for 135 million pounds ($224.8 million) to cover the cost of the F1 redevelopment at Donington Park has been unsuccessful," a statement said.

"Despite higher than expected levels of interest and very positive early indications, the bond - which was launched with Citi Group last week - has failed to secure enough subscription ahead of today's deadline.

"Information regarding the circuit's future plans is not yet available," the statement said.

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone had given Donington, who have a 17-year contract to host the race from next year until noon on Monday to remedy a breach of contract after repeatedly extending deadlines.

The Briton has said that Silverstone, the circuit that put on the first championship race in 1950 but lost the contract after this year's farewell, will be offered the chance to regain the grand prix.

A provisional calendar issued this week by the governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) left a question mark over the July 11 race.

Donington, who have already lost their MotoGP race to Silverstone, had promised to invest 100 million pounds to revamp the circuit over a five-year period.

It was like a building site when we went earlier this year, I doubt it looks much different now.

Agree Ben,it would`ve been much nicer for the money to go to Brands for GP status again.Just wishful thinking.

no ones going to touch donny now especially in the credit crunch.

that leaves a building site in the midlands for kids to run about on.

unless bernie buys it as a toy and plays around with in

its a fly tip dumping ground now.

Donington in doldrums without a buyer

(UKPA) – 40 minutes ago

The future of Donington Park is in further jeopardy as administrators have been unable to find a buyer for the circuit.

Former owners Donington Ventures Leisure Limited were forced into administration last month, with liabilities of around £20million. DVLL's failure to secure the investment required to turn the track into a venue fit to host Formula One proved the company's undoing.

DVLL chief executive Simon Gillett had agreed a 17-year deal with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone to host the British Grand Prix from next year, only for his ambitious plans to fall by the wayside.

As work had already begun, Gillett has left Donington Park in a state of disrepair and currently unfit to host any form of motor sport event.

Administrators Begbies Traynor have now returned the lease to the circuit-owning Wheatcroft family.

"Although there have been many interested parties and detailed and lengthy negotiations, ultimately it has not been possible to do a deal," said Nigel Price, a partner at Begbies Traynor.

There had been hope with the British GP contract on the table it would prove a significant lure, and that Donington Park would pick up the staging of the race from 2011.

However, the fact Ecclestone and Silverstone managed to agree a new deal ultimately dissuaded a number of potential suitors.

"DVLL had a 17-year contract with Formula One Administration to host the British Grand Prix, but this was finally lost at the end of November and some parties withdrew," added Price.

"There was still serious interest in the circuit as a national track, although the onerous terms of the lease meant a deal could not be done in the relatively short timescale available to us."
