Dominant Nations in MotoGP

Over the last few decades we've had America, Italy and now Spain as the dominant nations in MotoGP/GP 500.
I'm talking generally here, not exceptional individuals like Doohan and Stoner so as to disrespect Australia.
Why do folks think the Japanese haven't featured in any such dominance as they're the best manufacturers by far? Are they just too polite and not aggressive enough or not mentally strong enough to handle the pressure of the sport?
Who will be the next nation to dominate, or will the Spaniards continue? The Italians have a large group of young riders including team VR, could they be ones, can Red Bull do anything?
Opinions guys... something other than bickering [emoji1]

Japs always seemed to be the 'nearly there' riders , capable of running close to the front but rarely challenging for the win. I say seemed as they have all disappeared from GP class apart from the odd wild card.

What did Wayne Gardner ever do to you?

Thats a really good question, like you say the Spanish are the most dominant at the moment with guys participating and young guys coming through. The Italians seem to have many young guys coming through via the VR46 academy.

I know in Australia motorcycle racing is really struggling, the ASBK series feels more like a local track meet than a national series. The bikes are pretty much Superstock to keep the costs low ... most of the guys in the series are just earning their stripes to secure a ride in a European series. Not much incentive for people to throw money at it and try to generate more interest, We don't have the population ... or something.

I know there is a GP Juniors series based on standardised Yamaha R15's to keep costs really low run as a support series for the ASBK. Kids 12 - 16 and bikes cost under $5k fully kitted out and ready to race.

GP Juniors Australia | Supporting Australia's future motorcycle champions

I dont see anything to think it will change from the Spanish or Italians any time soon.

This was discussed about 5 years ago on this board and i cant remember what the consensus was for the reason that Japan has never produced a GP contender. Kato may have been the one but he died way to early in his career to know. You would think with all of the Japanese nationalism, the resources, the machines, they would spit out contenders one after the other.

I've thought about this a lot. There's a thriving club racing scene in Japan. But when it comes to serious sponsorship required to support racers at the international level - I strongly suspect it's just not really there. Culturally - the Japanese are still very provincial and xenophobic. They just don't give a lot of credence to the idea of Japanese doing anything outside of Japan itself. Even in this day and age, Japanese who leave the country for a few years to work or study in the USA - are viewed as culturally polluted and treated with suspicion as a result of being exposed to Western culture. I suspect that at some level Japanese riders at some level, don't fully commit because they have some kind of intrinsic anxiety about breaking the mold; something that is very un-Japanese.

Always had an abiding interest in Japanese culture, hence having been a big supporter of Nitro Nori and Aoyama. It takes a certain kind of courage to risk being set culturally adrift in order to chase your dream.

It's a shame Tamada isn't still racing. I always enjoyed watching his style, especially when someone was following him with an onboard camera. It looked like he was going to drag his shoulder at times.

Never made it to the premier class but Shoya Tomizawa was one to watch but I liked Daijiro Kato, what an amazing rider, such a pity that his death saw the end of Suzuka as a race track.

Did he give you a dose?

Cuntslow is a piece of .... at the end of the day. If he weren't British he'd have gotten his ... punted right out of GP. He's on a satellite bike because no factory team will touch him after the .... he pulled at Ducati. Cuntslow likes to pretend he is on the LCR of his own choice...no he's on it because no one else wants him.

That Hayden was tapped over Cuntslow to ride the factory bike last year tells you everything you need to know. Yes Cuntslow did win the race, but you need to remember that if HRC thought that highly of him, they would have thrown plenty of cash and a temp rider to LCR to borrow Cuntslow for that race weekend. They didn't because why reward a guy who slags off everyone and everything when things don't go his way. Oh wait, I forgot it's that "British humor".:rolleyes:

^^ What an amazing person, knows everything about paddock politics and why contracts can just be discarded for a single race or two. Why did he win those races if he's so slow? Another example of someone shooting their mouth off without realising how this sport works.

Ahhhh a routine appearance from Dani the Dim!

Was waiting for this, and you deliver once again!

HRC holds considerable power...and could have made anything work if they wanted it to. You must be new to GP.

Maybe you should at least figure out who pulls the strings instead of shooting your mouth off eh?

Who said anything about Cuntslow being slow? I sure as .... didn't. There's you and your straw men fallacies again! You never disappoint Dani the Dim. As I like to say, you serve a purpose here, as no forum is complete without the village ......

You really haven't advanced much beyond junior school have you?
Calling names and such! You call that a valid contribution to this forum?

I take it with comments like that you know him very well and feel able to pass on your wisdom.

It's not his talent that is questionable it's his attitude, put Rea on the same bike and he'd make Cal look silly.

I don't go along with that , Cal has the talent that only comes from years of learning GP bikes. While Rea is undoubtedly fast on a superbike, were he to switch to GP he would struggle to make top 10 at first.
