Once upon a time Hopper had a chance. When he was young he seemed highly adaptable and more able to overcome challenges.
Unfortunately, staying with Suzuki may have banished him into the realm of window dressing for sales. He is highly skilled and has a huge chip on his shoulder. I'm sure he was in talks with Yamaha too, and he probably is furious his dealings with them fell through (probably even more pissed at Burgess b/c he probably had a big say in who worked with him next).
Unfortunately, Hopper comes with a lot of emotional baggage (it finally spilled over this week at Laguna). I hope he gets some results with Kawasaki b/c riders teetering on the edge of greatness and underachievement (Melandri, Hayden, Hopkins, Pedrosa, Stoner) can't afford to be head-cases.
2003 was his worst season (17th in the championship) since then he's gone 16th, 14th, 10th, and he's sitting in 4th right now. His move to Kawasaki is unbefitting of someone with his experience and focus (unless Kawasaki are paying him millions) and it seems the market doesn't have much confidence in his stock anymore. I think his best chance is to overachieve at Kawasaki and then try to politic his way into a ride at Yamaha or Ducati.
Lady Luck has not shined upon him yet, but maybe this move will help instigate change.
