Daytona 500 bizarre incident

Been watching racing for a lot of years and never witnessed what happened at Daytons tonight. While under caution, JPM is coming around at around 100 mph to join up with the field . A jet dryer is on the track blowing off debri. Something breaks on JPM's car and he veers up the banking and collides with the jet blower. It immediatley goes up in a fireball with 200 gallons of jet fuel running down the banking like a river. This ignites, causing a river of flame. Caused a 2 hour delay after they finally got it put out with all the clean up. They thought they might have top call the race, thinking the inferno had melted the track, but it turned out to be ok and they got to finish the race.JPM's car looked like it had been fire bombed, and the back of the jet dryer was a big wad of melted metal.. Crazy .....
 
JPM's crew chief told him to hit the pace car, not the jet dryer car and it got lost in translation....lol shades of Days of Thunder
 
I forced myself to watch the entire thing, and I'm glad I did. History, even if it was not good history.



The surface appeared to be okay so I hope it doesn't screw with the 200.
 
NASCAR got an unexpected surprise after the race. They found out that Monday night racing is ready for primetime . Most watched Daytona 500 ever.

Interesting. So attendance doesnt matter much eh?
 
.... yea.

I dont watch Nascar and unless its football season or a race the tv is not on on sunday.

I heard it was on mon night and i actually watched some of it. ( does 10 minutes count? Hell its a start)

That was my thought . Why not mon night. Everyone is home unlike a sunday and looking for something to watch

And if they used SOHC/DOHC instead of OHV they'd probably have a dozen manufacturers. The fans will never go along with it, and if Daytona 500 is somehow moved to Monday night, they'll have to give ISC a giant kickback (even if they are basically the same company).
 
That was the wildest incident I have ever seen in a race. Juan's really lucky he wasn't burned with all the jet fuel sprayed around, not to mention the guy driving the truck.



Otherwise that was a terrible race. NASCAR restrictor plate racing is something apart from actual racing, it seems. It would seem the entertainment value comes from anticipating the wrecks instead of watching cars race. I wish they would flatten the turns and let the drivers actually race. Stock car racing's biggest event is a lottery...a joke.

Or simply give them the 950 hp back. It is not racing when you never have to lift, like you said , its a lottery. I really shouldnt say its not racing, since some are actually better than others at restrictor plate racing, but its not good racing.. a couple of years ago, they let a car go out at Talladega without plates, and it averaged 221 mph. It was hitting around 240 on the straights, down to around 200 on the corners. That would seperate the men from the boys.

..... in seats sets the barometer to how popular a sport is. TV contracts are negotiated off of popularity. If fans quit showing up for races, the tv contract would shrink accordingly. There is no sport that has a huge tv contract that does not have ..... in seats, and bunches of them.

But stock cars apparently can't stay on the ground at those speeds when they get sideways, otherwise I would agree. Restrictor plates arguably make for potentially good drama for casual viewers. A lot more drivers can win if they have a good motor and/or survive the crashes (Derrick Cope, Sterling Marlin, Michael Waltrip, Trevor Bayne, etc.). When the series gets to the 1.5 miles and short tracks, the cream usually rises to the top and there are fewer darkhorses.



That said, as a serious racing fan I find the pack racing hard to stomach. Everyone stays glued together for 480 miles, waiting for the end and watching out for "the big one." At times it seems random: one smaller group breaks away out front, then the larger group catches up somehow. The seesaw action between last year's tandems was really funky. Apart from Montoya's crash, This year's 500 was quite dull. That fire may be the only thing memorable about this year's race.

I'm not sure what kind of fence would hold a 3,000 lbs stock car going 220 or faster. Carl Edwards ripped the fence apart doing 195. Also, who knows how well the cars would hold up if they scraped fence posts at those speeds.

Shupe, it's a risk no doubt, racing is dangerous. NASCAR attendance has been so low, they probably have room to move most spectators up the grand stands to keep them out of harms way, but the dude standing on the flag stand is ......!!!
