A French motorcyclist has been found dead under a remote shelter after he vanished during the
Dakar Rally Competitor Found Dead
Competitor Pascal Terry, 49, went missing on Sunday during the second stage of the famous off-road motorbike, car and truck race.
He was found three days later, during the fourth stage of the event, which is taking place in South America for the first time.
"The motorcyclist was found in an area that is very inaccessible, 15 metres from his bike," event organisers said in a statement.
"He had taken off his helmet and had taken shelter, with food and water next to him."
Terry went missing on the stage between Santa Rosa and Puerto Madryn in Argentina, which at 520 miles is the longest day of competition in the rally.
The motorcyclist had informed race control that he had run out of petrol, but said he had been given some by another competitor.
Organisers later tried to contact him on two occasions, but were unable to get any response.
Search operations were launched the following day and Terry was found dead by local police on Wednesday morning.
An investigation is taking place to determine the cause of death.
The Frenchman is the first fatality on this year's rally.
British driver Paul Green and his navigator Matthew Harrison were left in serious condition in hospital after their car overturned during Saturday's first stage.
The 30th Dakar Rally is being held in Argentina and Chile instead of Africa.
Organisers were forced to call off last year's race in Africa because of terrorist threats.
