Control Tire developed for who?

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE <div class='quotemain'>John Hopkins has confirmed that the front tyre construction given to all riders during the first day of the new single-brand era, during testing at Valencia on Monday, 'feels identical' to that used by world championship rivals Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner during the 2008 MotoGP season.

I suppose most of us 'reasonable' folks already knew the direction tire "development" (if that is what they are calling it) would take, but to me here is a bit of an indication to further confirm my thought--that it would simply be Rossi's tires for everyone else to use.

It looks like they will cart out Rossi's (and to a lessor degree, Stoner's) tires and have everybody else adapt. It must be nice. Nothing has changed, same old .... of yesteryear. Skew the playing field, rack up the records, and have the sheep sing the praises of the titles while the fat cats laugh all the way to the ratings bank.

I could here the smoke filled room now. 'Ok gentlemen, everybody is gonna have to use the same tires, so what are these tires gonna be like?' Answer: 'Ah man, that's easy, lets just take Rossi's tires, you know, the ones that we forced Stoner to adapt to all year, and make everybody use those. Now we will really see who is the best..wink wink.'

Rossi Day 1 test: Ah ...., these tires are great, just like all year. Hell, I'm going home tomorrow.

It would almost be funny, only if it wasn't true.

I await the Rossi-fan spin machine. Hey, its the off season, we need some kind of entertainment.

Even before the single tire rule they were headed in that direction. Hasn't everyone other than Kawasaki supposedly been on the Stoner/Rossi tires since Brno or so? Are they really more Rossi's than stoner's at this point? I have no doubt that they've taken Rossi's lead this season, but Stoner's still been winning on them longer. Not like we can know, but they've each won one WC on a bridgestone front tire. Heck, maybe they're more Capirossi's than anyone else's, a product of his years developing the Ducati on Bridgestones? Rossi did make some pretty massive setup changes coming to grips with them early in the season, after all.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE <div class='quotemain'>Rossi and some other riders had previously expressed concern that Bridgestone's plans to allow only 20 tyres per rider at each race weekend next season - and only two different compounds - would cause problems, but he was pleasantly surprised by the new 'one size fits all' rubber. Crash.net

Well no ...., its your 'rubber' Rossi. Why even say "suprised", as if we all didn't know. Uhm, "one size fits all" more like, "my size gonna have to fit you all".

I guess they should have gone for Hopkins preferred front then?

What would you have done? No need to answer Jumkie because I can't find fault with Bridgestone taking the tyre of the last two world champions and also the two riders that finished 1st and 2nd in this years championship. We never heard Stoner or any other Bridgestone rider complain about their front this year. Just Hopkins and West on the p.o.s. Kawasaki.

I said it when this all started, that there would be a problem because the spec tire would be a spec Rossi tire.Every decision Dorna makes is with the thought of keeping Rossi around and winning.I said on this board over a year ago that GP would find itself in trouble when the day came that Rossi retired. He captured the imagination of millions with his ability and his antics and once he is gone.the fringe fan that just loves pulling for a winner will disappear.Dorna will milk those abilities because they know bad times are around the corner. There is not one rider on the grid who can take his place.Pedro, not the answer,he might be the most hated rider since Biaggi.Stoner,it doesnt matter how many he wins,he is not the clown suit kind of guy,Lorenzo, seen as a Rossi copy cat wannabe, besides,at the rate he is going,he will be to beat up to win once Rossi is gone.Hayden, nope,he is rspected, not adored.Dovi, maybe,if he can pound Pedro into submission.Thats about it.From a business stand point, i can see why Dorna would sale their soul to appease the Rossi horde, but in the long run,Dorna will pay and in the end the Rossi legacy will be just a little tarnished.

As far as I'm concerned this seals it.

They moved to the 800s to slow things down. Everyone was shocked to see that Ducati came out firing with a screaming new bike and new tire technology.

The front tire was the key to riding the bike fast in 2007. When Stoner destroyed the field even worse than he did in 2008 DORNA took action. At Jerez, everyone was on the same tires, but most importantly neither Pedrosa nor Stoner had their special front tire. The front became a useless piece of flaccid rubber. The rear remained strong enough to hold even the biggest burger munchers (in the end after extensive monitoring by DORNA officials). The idea was to create longer breaking lines and a later turn in. I'm sure they hoped later turn in wold lead to some passing.

All the teams started sending weight to the back of the bike. Bridgestone worked to develop new compounds that would work well with the spec carcass. Teams started slapping new parts all over their bikes (Ducati), developing a new chassis (Suzuki), and playing feverishly with offset (Yamaha). The mad dash to come up with new technology based on the control carcass was on.

Ducati injured all of their test riders trying to squeeze performance out of existing kit. Enter Gibernau.

The Rossi squad passed offset data to Colin. What in the hell possessed them to think that the new offset specs Rossi used to transition to Bridgestones would be useful on a Michelin shod bike?
<

Now the pinnacle of it all. After a season of making special handbuilt prototype tires with special prototype carcasses and special compounds (right?), Bridgestone have pulled the magic 1-carcass control tire out of their bag of tricks in just 1 month.

I'm sure finding 1 carcass to suit every track was an easy task. Glad to know it's been tested, seeing as testing is an integral part of safer tires.

What's this you say, John? The current tire feels exactly the same as the spec tire they developed for Rossi and Stoner. Maybe that's because this entire season has been a test for a 1 carcass spec tire. They hoped both manufacturers could hang around to play, but Michelin can't seem to develop rubber for most newly repaved tracks.

Does Ezy really let the sport go in to 2009 without a contingency plan in place in case Michelin fails again? Michelin failed and no one missed a beat this season. That's usually how things work when a major manufacturer packs up shop and leaves at the last minute. That's pretty much how it happened in 2007, right? But nothing has changed since the end of 2007. How is this possible!!!!!!!

Vale says the racing won't be closer next season. Pretty easy to make that call when you've been riding on a control tire for all of 2008.

Was it just a tire when Valentino was still with Michelin? Pick a side, Curvey.
<

But in all reality, it shouldn't be any surprise that the tire comes from Rossi/Stoner. How many races did that tire win in 2007/08? Did any other Bridgestone riders win any dry races? Why wouldn't you take your most successful tire in recent memory and use it as a spec tire? Although, if safety really is what this is all about then it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Excellent point Austin. In the interest of safety, as Dorna has said, the control tire is to be rolled out with it's purpose of slowing them down in the corners. Yet as we see it now, were on the same tires, with the same speed. But who am I trying to kid, we all knew it was bs the second we heard it.

It makes no sense unless you realize that all of the safety concerns were already addressed this season. This control tire is the result.

Why else would you have a squishy front tire that has been described by the riders as vague, if not to reduce corner entry speeds?

The manufacturers overcame the soft front by overloading the rear tire, so cornerspeed was never reduced significantly, but that's to be expected with any change in the 800 era.

Why the complaint? Every team wants to run that front. It is the best tire out there and Hayden said he would have to work to find its limit. And it is not settled that this will be the final tire for next year at this stage. Likely they will lesson the grip like they said they will.

How can you complain when they have to run the best ....... tire in the world? .... the teams that can't adapt. I have nightmares about ...... tires not great tires.

Because I recallColin Edwards statement that no one could ride Rossi tires. Because Pedrosa can't ride the tires, at least Bridgestone said he would struggle. Because it doesn't work on a kawasaki or really that well on suzuki. Because it shows favortism. When you have the best rider on the best bike and now the tires that everyone has to use is made for that rider but other riders are forced to use them, it's kind of a no brainer why this .... is ...... up. .... the teams and riders that can't be like Rossi

because that is the only way to win a championship now. They should make thier bikes like his too.

At the beginning Rossi was not being listen at everything he said, it took him at least a 125, a 250, a 500cc and a couple of MotoGP Championships, there we were at 5 World Championships. That puts us at the end of 2003, in which, against all odds, he left by choice the strongest Factory that had the most influence, and on top of the challenge on his shoulders, Rossi prove them wrong. With a crappy Bike got 1 more Championship, and started to change the package into a winning one for the second time. Got a bit lost, for whatever the reasons, for a couple of years, and now got it back to winning. Rossi hard earned being listen to like no other…

There you go Jumkie, how did you like the 'Rossi-fan spin machine'… Happy, or was it the 'anti-Rossi-fan spin machine' at work first?
