With a single ECU and standardised software for all bikes, what is the difference between factory and non-factory? For example, how does Dovi's bike vary from Laverty's?

Who gets what at MarcVDS? I've never seen anything that clearly states it, but I have been assuming that Miller is on the customer RCV1000 and Rabat is on the RC216(?)V. But even then what is the difference between the two? The first year of the customer bike it had it's own engine designed to be sold with the machine to those with enough money. Last year, after performing badly compared to the open Yamaha, they had the previous year"s factory engine. So how is the 1000 different to the 216?

Good question:

In the case of Dovi Vs Lavery: Quite a lot. For Dovi as the factory rider gets a GP16. Pramac (Petrucci & Redding) will get the factory's GP15's they used this yr and all the other Ducati teams (Avintia, Aspar) will get GP14's.

For Yamaha/Honda. As you say there isn't much difference in that aspect. They have an engine allocation increase from 5 to 7 and the satellite teams have minimal if any use of seamless gearboxes.

Millar and Rabat will be on RC213V's. The RCV1000RR is outdated and has served it's purpose. Rabat gets the 213V that VDS lease from Honda but Miller is contracted directly to Honda, so they will supply him with a 'factory' bike for it would be useless running one outdated RCV1000RR just for him.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but that's what I've read.

Essentially yes, though I'm sure there will be some minor (but crucial) differences.

That seems a little unfair, considering how hard Redding worked to get himself on a factory bike for 2015/6.

Maybe I should declare my intense dislike for Miller, which may cloud my perception. If only he'd stop being quite good.

Well, thats racing isn't it?

Miller got contracted directly from Moto3 to MotoGP by Honda. Redding has never had a factory contract and didn't help himself this yr. Though I believe he has a 'factory' contract at Pramac.

I think his results or lack of where really bad for his placing at Honda and I think he may have been slightly lucky to get the deal he got with Pramac/Ducati

Edit: the Honda clearly isn't easy to ride I remember last year there were reports of both Marquez and Pedro asking for this years bike to be easier to ride clearly it wasn't and if anything it was harder.

Your signature really is quite refreshing to see.
