TEAM M4 SUZUKI SIGNS WESTBY FOR DAYTONA SPORTBIKE, CARDENAS TO JOIN SUPERBIKE CLASS

Team Hammer, racing as Team M4 Suzuki, has signed Dane Westby to compete in Daytona SportBike in 2011.

With 2010 AMA Pro Daytona SportBike Champion Martin Cardenas moving to the Superbike class with M4 Suzuki for 2011, Westby will pilot the team's Suzuki GSX-R600 as the team defends its title.

"I'm really looking forward to the Daytona test and getting to ride the Team M4 Suzuki. I'm really excited for the new year and this deal coming together is great. My goal is to make 2011 the Year of The Wolverine," said Westby, referring to his nickname. "Team Hammer and (team owner) John Ulrich have been in the racing game for a long time and they know what is needed to put a competitive team out there. They won the championship last year and that speaks for itself. They were already there and getting the job done when I raced my first AMA Pro event, and that means a lot to me, as does their endurance racing success. Suzuki has a new model for 2011 that is lighter and stronger and that is another positive."

Westby, 23 years old, had a breakthrough 2010 which saw him fight for the win in the Daytona 200 before earning his first AMA Pro Daytona SportBike podium and finishing second. The Oklahoman led the season finale in Alabama as well, earning the lap leader bonus point en route to a third-place finish. Westby also earned the podium at California Speedway, Infineon Raceway and New Jersey Motorsports Park. He finished fifth in the season's point standings.

"The 2010 season was a big improvement for me as I was able to run up front and learn what it takes to stay up there. That time at the front is precious and there's no substitute for it," Westby continued. "This year, our goal is to win the championship and the way to do that is to stay in the top five and win when you can. I'm gonna take it race-by-race and the first one up is Daytona. I got a nice trophy for second place in the Daytona 200 last year but we'll be looking to improve one position on that and to start the season off the right way."

"We're looking forward to having Dane on our bike this year," said Crew Chief Keith Perry. "We've seen how he's come on in the last year and even before. He has the ability to run up front and our goal is to have him up there every week. As a team, we have a lot of experience with the 600cc Suzuki and our goal is to use that to help Dane continue his improvement. It was great that he was available and we were able to put a deal together with him."

With Westby in the Daytona SportBike class, Martin Cardenas will join Chris Ulrich in AMA Pro American Superbike. The rapid Colombian's presence in Superbike is sure to boost the series' excitement level.

"Naturally, we're really looking forward to having Martin on the Superbike as well," Perry continued. "We think he's one of the very top talents in the paddock and we're anxious to see him on our big bike. Sure, there will be a transition period but when we first saw Martin in AMA Pro he was racing a 1000; we know him well and we're supremely confident in him and what he can do. As a team, our challenge is to give him the equipment he needs to compete."

....... abso;ute ........ that Herrin and Eslick can't get a sbk ride along with him. I've now become Cardenas # 1 fan. I hope he wipes the field of the crop of midpackers the AMA force feeds us every year. We have to watch the fabulous .......... bros underachieve year after year on primo rides while the future has to languish in a support class. Cardenas is on par with Slick and Herrin so if he kicks ... it will only prove that these team managers are a bunch of neanderthals

JK, for the record, who told you Cardenass was going to SBK last month?
<

Anyway, bro, sometimes youth doesn't ..... wily veteran experience. The young guns have to take it from the statesmen. I guess they haven't impressed enough to get the Sbk rides. The "old" guys like Boz, Tommy, Hayes, still got some say because they are still fast. Also, the teams are being conservative because they know the kids break a lot of ..... But I see your point, I mean, if they don't get a chance to step up to the big boy bikes, how will they ever become men?

Lets not forget that success on a 600 in no way guarantees success on a Superbike. Im not convinced that Cardenas will be a success on a Superbike. I personally feel that out of the 3 you mentioned, Eslick would fair better than the other 2 simply because of his style and his strength.Im guessing that somewhere along the line, Herrin has tested on a Graves Superbike and has been deemed not ready. He still hasnt proven anything in AMA racing except the fact that he is extremely talented, and extremely inconsistent, and possibly a tad bit mentally weak. 3years ago, those traits were ok because of his age, now, it has become a pattern, one he must break this year if he is to be taken seriously in the bike racing world.

Yeah, but I think what JK is saying is, lets at least give them a change to prove it. I think the problem is good Sbk rides are limited, and while the Vets are brining the equipment home in one piece and regularly making headlines by putting bike on podium, that's enough for them.

Heres what I've heard from two insiders:

Cardenas will be a top 5 in Sbk and will improve throughout season.

Eslick is the most talented of the three but rides with heart on sleeve not smart.

Herrin is too ..... wiped and is effecting his focus.

Thats ok if you have no world aspirations. This SB series is so watered down, you had better be head and shoulders above the competition if you want a tryout on the world scene.

Well they're not exactly beating down the doors to pay Americans to go to said stage, eh. Cardenas is Columbian though, so maybe he has a shot.

I don't see cardenas doing too well in Superbike. I agree that Eslick seems like the one who would be better suited for the big bike. As much as I like the kid, Herrin has to get his .... together this year and bring home that title if he ever wants to move up to the world stage! DSB should be fun to watch with all the rookies cup kids who will be Joining the series.

I'd be surprised if Cardenas is top 5. He's going to be riding against 5 guys with more skill, imo, (Hayes, Hayden, Hayden, Bostrom, Young) on better prepped bikes. You can't really count out Pegram or EBoz or any of the other guys either. I know Cardenas is fast, but I don't see top 5 in his future. We will see. He might get some help.

Its actually caused a lot of problem I told by a couple of insiders. Its not just "likes a little", its almost an obsession. Its caused problems for the team dynamic. We are talking about firings and hirings over his lack of focus.

Agree - it's vital that he be kept free of all distractions this season!
