<{POST_SNAPBACK}><div class='quotemain'>5 Ducatis? Wow... that is alot of bikes to build. Especially as Sete will have to get bikes closer to the factory than the Alice Team. Ducati is the new Honda. The bike you want.
It has nothing to do with being the best bike it has to do with Stoner and the power of governing body or the militant marketing wing.
As teams dominate in the 4 stroke era they run more and more equipment. This is the last thing you want to do as a manufacturer when you're running up the score. Ducati have more wins in the 800cc era than any other manufacturer. The governing body requires factories to run more bikes as they pull away from the rest of the field. When they suck, they are allowed to contract (i.e. Kawasaki or Suzuki). This is how the governing body maintains a minimum number of bikes, it is how the governing body keeps the winning team from winning in perpetuity.
I think there is also some kind of new rule that says you only get rider subsidies if you put the incoming riders on factory equipment. Tech 3 was upgraded before Toseland's arrival and Kawasaki were reportedly running a third factory bike b/c Aspar was certain he could get Bautista. Kallio is certainly getting subsidies if he is in fact going to land at Alice; Alice are recently on factory equipment with factory support.
I think the obvious exception was Honda last year. I bet there was a compromise for them because they power 40% of the grid and they had a dismal 2007 season. They were probably allowed to keep everyone on last year's bike and still rake in the dough for Dovi, DeAngelis, and probably even DePuniet and Nakano. Next year they are forced to upgrade all of their customer bikes to the pneumatic spec.
Hmmmm..........forced to upgrade customers to the pneumatic engine before it's shown any success on track. I find that to be most interesting. Somebody must already know how well it performs.
