First I heard was a Tweet by Kropo, GPone confirmation here.
Twenty year old Brett McCormick dominated the 2011 Canadian SBK championship, then as a BMW Canada reward he was invited to the FIM SS round at Portimao where he beat all three of Garnier Alpha BMW's three contracted riders, including Markus Reiterberger, who stands eighth in the championship, finishing a very impressive 10th.
As a result of his showing in the Supersport race, McCormick was allowed to test a few of the topflight racing bikes the day after the final 2011 World Superbike round.
On a bike he had never ridden before, the Effenbert Liberty-sponsored Ducati 1098R, the Saskatoon native posted the ninth fastest time among all the WSBK regulars, just 1.4 seconds behind Portimao race winner Eugene Laverty. More tellingly, he was just one place behind Marco Melandri, former MotoGP star and second-place finisher in this year’s WSBK championship.
Effenbert offered him a WSS ride on a Panigale but have now added a fourth 1098 to their WSBK stable (already having Guintoli, Smrz and Berger) so McCormick's getting a WSBK ride!
At 6'3" and 170lbs he's not really a MGP candidate but damn, good on ya kid! I'll be rootin' for ya!
